Folks, this issue is almost fixed.

First is that brasero nautilus plugin was locking the DVD drive. This
one and many many more bugs were fixed in the git branch 'gnome-2.28' in
the brasero
Can confirm that running above resolves the locking and failure to mount
all types of media ( data cd's and dvd's, audio cd's, dvd_video in both
internal and external cd/dvd drives

I have discovered that with compositing (3D effects) turned on, I can
see the wallpaper and icons on desktop 1 but the others are just plain
black. If I deactivate compositing, I can see the wallpaper on all
desktops but the icons are only shown on desktop 1. This is in Ubuntu
9.04.

okay basically, there was a bug in alarm-clock that caused the entire
desktop to freeze. the reason this bug is filed separately is because
the bug in alarm-clock was fixed, but python should not be able to

just confirming this case, went to sync with google contacts and I got
the error, ubuntu 8.10 and I went to the keyring and double checked I am
