Re: [Bug 26338] Re: Adding a user to a group modifies other users' groups and passwords

2007-07-16 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi David,

David Green [2007-07-07 13:00 -]:
 Martin,

 Any updates on this bug and when it will be fixed? All I see on Launchpad
 is that it has been marked as critical. I am still getting emails from
 other users that it is a problem and it seems a pretty critical one.
 Because of some of my company requirements until this bug is fixed I can't
 use Ubuntu but would like to.

I appreciate that this is a critical thing, but so far still nobody
could give a recipe for reproduction. I have never been able to
replicate this issue, so that we can examine it.

[Bug 123313] Re: support for the windows autorun mecanism - patch included

2007-07-26 Thread Martin Pitt
Very interesting, thank you!

I am not convinced about asking a question like Do you think that this
is safe? to an user, since usually they have no chance of giving a
profound answer (telling apart a good setup.exe from a Sony trojan).
However, if the defaults are sane (if you press Enter in a hurry, you'll
chose Not start), this would be a cool feature. Also, it should not
ask that question if wine is not installed.

I'll take a closer look at this soon, thank you!

[Bug 123078] Re: System - Quit takes a long time to appear

2007-08-06 Thread Martin Pitt
It is also very likely that this was related to compiz. Check gnome-
session-properties, which program currently tries to attach to the
session. For me, compiz often failed to connect and then timed out after
60 seconds. After it, the other services connected to the session (which
are responsible for the quit dialog, automounting, etc.).

[Bug 127944] Re: [gutsy] Open Office applications don't start

2007-08-08 Thread Martin Pitt
Seems that this originated from a change in gtk between 2.11.5 and
2.11.6. It still happens with OO.o 2.3.

There is no proper fix in sight for Tribe 4, so we have to bite the
bullet and temporarily add -gtk to Kubuntu for now:

 kubuntu-meta (1.48) gutsy; urgency=low
 .
   * Refreshed dependencies
   * Added openoffice.org-gtk to desktop-recommends-i386, desktop-
 recommends-amd64, desktop-recommends-powerpc. This is a temporary
 workaround for LP #127944 for Tribe 4.
   * Added restricted-manager-kde to desktop-recommends-sparc

Moving proper fix target to Tribe 5.

[Bug 80856] Re: F-Spot as default for importing photos

2007-08-08 Thread Martin Pitt
I heavily object against this in F-Spot's current state. It crashes very
often, import into a selected directory does not work (instead it always
puts them into ~/Photos), the UI is mostly disabled and thus unusable
for me in directory browsing mode, and the directory structure it
creates in ~/Photos is anything but sane and manageable (such as
~/Photos/2007/08/03/1234.jpg).

OTOH g-thumb does not 0wn your photos, has an easy and working import,
some basic features like lossless rotating and EXIF parsing, and does
not crash.

[Bug 58935] Re: two hald-addon-storage processes per pooled device

2007-08-10 Thread Martin Pitt
Accepted into dapper-proposed.

Verification steps for SRU team (requires that at least one CD-ROM drive is
installed (the virtual one on VMWare does fine, BTW):
 * With the current hal, ps aux|grep hald-addon-storage will give two
processes per CD-ROM drive.
 * Update to the new hal and reboot.
 * ps aux|grep hald-addon-storage will only give one process per CD-ROM drive.
 * Inserting a CD will automount it and open nautilus.

If you have a laptop which actually exposes that problem, please test
the packages in dapper-proposed and report whether the updated version
fixes the suspend problem for you.

Thank you!

[Bug 115652] Re: libgnome slows down desktop trying to open esd

2007-08-12 Thread Martin Pitt
libgnome (2.19.1-0ubuntu2) gutsy; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/11_aplay_fallback.patch: If connecting to esd failed once,
never try again. Failure to do so takes a lot of time and slows down all
actions of Gnome programs which (can) trigger sound events.

[Bug 23768] Re: /usr/bin/cpufreq-selector should have different access permissions

2007-08-21 Thread Martin Pitt
Yes, in theory we could confine cpufreq-selector to only be able to read
and write the relevant files in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/*,
maybe read some configuration files, and not much else. If the suid root
part is a very small program which just does that one thing, it should
be easy to create an apparmor profile. Judging by the file size and
linked libraries, this seems to be the case.

 Anyone have a fresh spare machine they can experiment on? Does this happen
 from a fresh install? If there's extraneous entries in the files? If
 you mix adduser and users-admin? Or useradd?

Doing these experiments, and finding which steps lead to that breakage
starting from a clean installation would be really appreciated,
indeed.

 I'd rather not muck around with my work system, as I'm not convinced I've
 localized the damage. My office might be able to dig an old machine out
 of storage, but I'm swamped for the next week at least.

Using VirtualBox or VMWare with snapshots is an awesome and safe way
of trying it out, BTW.

[Bug 54427] gnome-terminal changes size when switching tabs

2006-07-29 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

I have a non-maximized g-t with four tabs. Directly after session
startup, it works well. However, after changing something to the layout
(like adding a new tab, removing one, changing the font size, etc.)
changing the tab causes g-t to increase its size until it fills the
whole screen. This is fairly annoying :/

The trigger for this behaviour is not 100% deterministic, but after it
works once, the size growth is consistent when switching tabs.

[Bug 54741] Re: New windows stealing focus -- and passwords?

2006-07-31 Thread Martin Pitt
Metacity tries to avoid focus stealing, and usually it is quite
successful in that, at least for me. However, one offender that I notice
is gaim. When I receive a message, the gaim window pushes itself to the
foreground and grabs the focus, regardless of what I am doing (this even
happens if I play a movie fullscreen).

What I am trying to say is, that this doesn't seem to be a general
nautilus issue, but rather an application-specifig bug (like one in
gaim)? Which particular application does not work correctly for you?

[Bug 54741] Re: [Bug 54741] Re: New windows stealing focus -- and passwords?

2006-08-01 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi,

jmspeex [2006-08-01  5:18 -]:
  that this doesn't seem to be a general nautilus issue

 I assume you meant metacity issue here.

*blush* of course, sorry.

 I think there must be some
 soft of confusion in here. On all three Dapper machines I have, I have
 yet to see a *single* case of a window opening *without* getting focus.

Maybe we do talk about different issues here. If you are currently
typing, then new windows do not get the focus. However, they do get
the focus if you didn't type anything in the last second or so. I. e.
the behaviour tries to avoid suddenly typing stuff into another
window, but if you merely use the mouse to start an application, the
new window will have the focus. I just tried it again (with something
like 'sleep 5; nautilus' and typing (or not) in another terminal).

Can you please confirm that this doesn't work for you?

For the record, I do not consider this as an 'Oh my god, the sky has
fallen' bug, but focus stealing is annoying and dangerous enough to
make sure it gets eventually fixed. If there is a problem in dapper,
we need to judge the patch complexity whether or not we will fix it in
dapper.

[Bug 35538] Re: clock applet incorrectly grabs data from evolution calendar

2006-08-02 Thread Martin Pitt
I just noticed that I suffer from the very same issue. Sometimes, but
not always, the clock applet's appointments from Evolution are one hour
off. So, if anyone from the Desktop team wants to debug that with me,
I'm available. :)

[Bug 54615] Re: hal-device-manager depends on python2.4-dbus

2006-08-04 Thread Martin Pitt
 hal (0.5.7.1-0ubuntu4) edgy; urgency=low
 .
   * debian/hal.install: Revert 0.5.7.1-0ubuntu3 changes, install all
 hal-system-storage-* scripts again.
   * Add debian/patches/mount-scripts-pmount.patch:
 - Change mount/umount scripts to call pmount-hal/pumount as the
   destination user instead of mount/umount as root. This way, we do not
   have to rely on hal properties for sanity checking, which are unreliable
   in hal's current trust model.
 - This change should be completely transparent to the outside world, so
   that KDE and gnome-mount will just work.
   * debian/control: Add pmount dependency to hal for above change.
   * debian/control: Replace python version specific p-dbus and p-gnome2
 dependencies with their unversioned package names. Leave p-glade2 for now
 since it has not yet been converted. Closes: LP#54615

  * Remove *.omf.out from help directory (gnome.mk) (closes: #292374)
  * Moved dh_shlibdeps call to binary-predeb (debhelper.mk)
(closes: #326926)
  * Rewrote various shell conditionals as make conditionals
(closes: #222376)
  * Added 2.5 as possible Python version
  * Remove Python build directories for every used Python version
separately (closes: #300149); enhanced test case distutils-3.sh to
check this
  * Deal with rules files that set DH_COMPAT (closes: #362831)
  * Removed DEB_AUTO_CLEANUP_RCS feature; no one was using that correctly
(tarball.mk)
  * Don't clean config.cache, config.log, config.status; the upstream
package should do that (autotools.mk, autotools-files.mk)

 hal (0.5.7.1-0ubuntu6) edgy; urgency=low
 .
   * Add 16-nonpartitions-ending-in-nums.patch:
 - Hal currently assumes that device names ending in numbers are
   partitions. This patch adds a safe and easy, but slightly ugly
   workaround. (Real fix will be discussed with upstream at
   https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5558)
 - This breaks SCSI, USB, and Firewire CD drives, which are usually called
   'scd0', 'sr1', etc.
 - Closes: LP#56484 and an impressive number of duplicates.
