I'm not entirely certain this is a g-v-c issue, actually. The problem
seems to stem in part from the fact that the driver reveals a Playback
cap for your Line - perhaps this is inappropriately named and should
be Line-In, which is rather doubtful, but you didn't paste the rest of

When was the change made to remove libsdl1.2 from the live cd? At
least as of the manifests for the 13 Jan (Ubuntu) Lucid/10.04
daily-live discs, libsdl1.2debian and libsdl1.2debian-alsa are still
present.

Please allow me to reiterate that this symptom is not a PulseAudio bug
but a hardware one that can be worked around in the sound driver,
linux (with varying degrees of success for given hardware). The fact
that we have to work around it in PulseAudio (either by passing
