Bug #1097002 is about wireless connections, are we sure it's a
duplicate? By the way, I'm experiencing the same after upgrading to
raring. I'm using an ETHERNET connection, though everything seems fine
system-wide (syslogs, network manager and so on). To be able to connect,

Sorry for the delay.
I have had a look: there is a folder /var/log/gdm/ but when I try to
open it in syslog I get a permission violation.
If I try to edit the /etc/gdm/custom.conf it shows up as empty.
Can I simply re-install gdm by sudo apt-get install gdm?

Jochen, would it be possible on your specific installation to try Mate
or Gnome ? I am now wondering if it could be a confilt related to those
Mate and GVFS or Gnome and GVFS... I'll do a few more tests on my side
and you posted.

So, I just did a fresh reinstall. When the system came up from the
install it was working excellently - snappy responses from nearly
everything. I proceeded to run a full update including all the repos in

Curiously, I just upgraded my workhorse Xubuntu VM from 12.10 to 13.04,
