I did some investigation last night. Here's what I found out. gnome-
session doesn't (successfully) set a shutdown inhibitor lock, meaning
that logind shuts the system down as soon as it is asked to. When run,
gnome-session outputs the following warning

should appear, I am taken to console login screen. When I log in and
then do startx, Compiz loads, but without unity and the performance is
poor. I can start unity from the terminal again, but the

I have this problem in 13.04, 64 bit, confirm the same workaround. Cant
believe this bug has been open for four years!

I upgrade my system to Xubuntu 13.04 and now Emacs show text over text
and the cursor behaves strangely. If i press alt+tab the text is showed
correctly. I deleted the .emacs file but the problems are the same.
If i use emacs with option -nw everything
I just logged into Unity after logging out of Gnome Fallback and
immediately got this and other errors.
