This isn't specific to ubuntu btw. it happens on Fedora 38 too.
so far i've found that any `.json` or `.js` file will cause any instance
of the gnome filebrowser (nautilus, a file picker modal, etc) to crash
itself and any app that uses it.

What do you mean by "split windows out from tabs"? Do you mean right-
clicking on the tab and choosing "Detach Terminal"?
Do I understand correctly that the freeze and crash always happens right
after opening a new window or detaching a tab? Does the new window
appear before the freeze or not?
This is failing to retrace due to the fact that there are mixture of
packages from Noble and Jammy. It'd be interesting to look at the
timestamp of the crash versus where we were in the upgrade process but I
suspect it was somewhere in the middle. Subsequently, I think we should

Canonical occasionally breaks sound compatibility between kernel release
(but I yet to figure out why). However, the XanMod kernel quite rarely
breaks Lenovo sound compatibility, thus I suggest you give that kernel a
whirl: https://xanmod.org/ (It's quite easy to install and remove if
needed).
Probably time to bisect and then report back to Cirrus Logic.
