So after a couple of kernel upgrades, I'm back to no audio at all.
I was getting kind of excited after the last post, because at least the drivers
were being picked up. After a few reboots, they were still being picked up which
was awesome.
The downside was that no audio was actually going

Apologies for the long delay in getting back to this ticket - but I have
managed to get some time
to devote wholly to this issue.
I'll provide answers to post #11 first, followed by #12.

you have to compare the boot system log with yours to find out why
intel8x0 was not loaded
#9 was informative, but not quite sure how it relates to the context of
this report.

I updated the following lines to alsa-base config and rebooted:
options snd-intel8x0 index=0

Raymond, when you mentioned in post #6 to specify the card indexes, did you
mean just write:
snd-intel8x0 index=0
snd-hda-intel index=1
in alsa-base.conf ?
Currently, these exist in my alsa-base.conf:
options snd-intel8x0m index=-2
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
