With the open source drivers, I can't switch between the Intel and the
AMD gpus. It also starts to over hear the laptop. There's also a some
small slowdowns with the default drivers.

I am having this same problem with a USB drive (vfat) which I have been
using for some time as a backup disk. No problem until Ubuntu 12.10.
Temporarily mounting it via /etc/fstab until a fix is found for this
bug.

Looking at the kernal change log, there have been many problems with
pin fixups, power detection and jacks. The envy17 one you linked seems
to be different from mine - its for a notebook having problems with
internal speakers.
As to why I don't use pin fixup, that requires

1. Press physical power button on Dell 1420n laptop computer
2. Menu appears, select Suspend
3. Expect computer to suspend (which does work from gear-like Unity menu and
Suspend option)
What actually happens is computer does not suspend, also appears
It seems that the change did not go into Quantal. Any special reason for that?
