to automate the above step: i tried to put a shell script on startup
lsof just before remount to read-only of root:

.. and unclean shutdown as a result.

Strange! For me, all issues (in Akonadi and other apps as well)
disappeared with nVidia-325-15. In Debian, after upgrading to
KDE-4.11.3, at first I though the new KDE was buggy but all those bugs
turned out to be related to nVidia.

This all is not new. From the git history, LP: #345953 got fixed by
the inclusion of the current (and mostly unchanged) of the
logfiles_adm_readable.dpatch by Martin for 1.3.9-16. The logrotate
script exists at least since cups 1.2. It has enforced 640 root lp
since 1.3.8-1.

I have Trusty installed with all updates applied.
I now can change to all resolutions and go back to the initial one without any
issue.
I have nouveau drivers installed.

I should mention, that in contrast to the original report, the stippled window
borders appear now independent of the compositor state (on or off).
I've also tested xfwm4 in combination with compton (standalone opengl
compositor) with the same result: occasional appearance of stippled borders.
Ok, how I installed Ubuntu 12.04.3. I can't see any problem using
proprietary drivers (304) and I can see glitches in dash using nouveau.
Should I do an apport-collect while using nouveau?
