Hi Sam,

Thanks for your replay, after removing the “unless=java.version.8” I can do a
proper build using java8 that works on the java8 jvm.

But this raise another question, is the plan officially release two versions of
Cassandra, one for Java8 and one for Java11?

This was unintentional, it looks like we just missed removing the
“unless=java.version.8” from the artifacts & _artifacts-init targets in
build.xml.
I’ve tested that with those removed, it’s just a matter of having the
appropriate target jdk specified in $JAVA_HOME (and using -Duse.jdk11=true or
$CASSANDRA_USE_JDK11=true if building with jdk11).

We’ll fix this in trunk, but in the meantime removing those conditions should
unblock you.

Thanks,
Sam

I also tried to change this back and force Java11 to build Java8 compatible
code but it seams that there are some changes in the ByetBuffer implementation
in Java11 that breaks when execution in a Java8 jvm, when I started Cassandra
it throws a NoSuchMethodError when trying to open the sstables.

The reason for this is that some methods in the ByteBuffer implementation in

so there seams to be a way to fix this even if the resulting code looks ugly
to me.

My question is, are we intentionally giving up Java8 comparability in 4.0 or do
we still want to support Java8?

Hi Attila,

I just realized that the build I was using was two weeks old, but now I have
double checked with the latest trunk and there is no changes in this area and I
get the same behavior.

One explanation might be that "artifacts" dosen't fail, if just do nothing due
to the “unless=java.version.8”, the failure is in mvn-install:

[artifact:mvn] [ERROR] Failed to execute goal
org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-install-plugin:2.3.1:install-file (default-cli)

/repos/Ctrunk/cassandra/build/apache-cassandra-4.0-SNAPSHOT-dist.pom (No such
file or directory) -> [Help 1]

I think that the apache-cassandra-4.0-SNAPSHOT-dist.pom should have been
generated in the artifacts step.

I can't find a way to build 4.0 artifacts so I can run Cassandra using Java8.
Building the artifacts ("ant artifacts" or "ant mvn-install") requires building
with Java11 but since CASSANDRA-15108 the result is not Java8 compatible
anymore, is this intentional or was this done by mistake?

I also tried to change this back and force Java11 to build Java8 compatible
code but it seams that there are some changes in the ByetBuffer implementation
in Java11 that breaks when execution in a Java8 jvm, when I started Cassandra
it throws a NoSuchMethodError when trying to open the sstables.

The reason for this is that some methods in the ByteBuffer implementation in
Java11 returns a Bytebuffer but in Java8 and before they returned a Buffer. I
found a bit of information on Stackoverflow
(https://stackoverflow.com/questions/48693695/java-nio-buffer-not-loading-clear-method-on-runtime)
so there seams to be a way to fix this even if the resulting code looks ugly
to me.

My question is, are we intentionally giving up Java8 comparability in 4.0 or do
we still want to support Java8?

Tommy

I have already done some testing in this are lately and created a few

Re: Testing 4.0 upgrading

2018-10-24 Thread Tommy Stendahl
Hi Jason,

Thanks for responding.

I have created two jiras for these things: CASSANDRA-14841 and
CASSANDRA-14842.

I understand the initial 4.0->3.x connection problem, since the incoming
connection from the old node isn't accepted the 4.0 node will never know
that it tries to connect to a old node and continuous to try to connect
on the storage_port instead on the ssl_storage_port.

I will enable SSL debugging and activate wire tracing and see if I can
find out more.

I can also add that I have upgraded all nodes in the cluster to 4.0 and
once a node was upgraded to 4.0 it started talking to the other 4.0 node
as expected. I had data in the cluster from before the upgrade and after
doing "nodetool upgradesstables" there where no issues restarting the
clients.

Now I will reinstall the old version and do the upgrade again and
hopefully I can have more information soon.

/Tommy

Testing 4.0 upgrading

2018-10-23 Thread Tommy Stendahl
Hi,

I have been testing upgrade to 4.0, I started out with a cluster with
3.0.15 and server encryption enabled. Due to some issues in my
environment I did upgrade one of the nodes to 3.11.3, I think this
turned out to be a good thing since I could observer the behaviour of
upgrading from both 3.0.15 and 3.11.3 at the same time.

At first I didn't have much success at all, it look like found multiple
issues mostly with server encryption so I decided to simplify thing and
disabled server encryption.

So with server encryption disabled the upgrade was working ok, what I
did notice was exceptions in the 3.0.15 and 3.11.3 nodes once the first
4.0 node started.

3.0.15 exception:

I got one or two of these exceptions every minute, I could not see that
this was causing any problems but I don't really like exceptions in the
log. Should we expect exceptions like this during an upgrade or is this
a problem we should look in to?

So now I enabled server encryption again, with this configuration:
storage_port: 12700
ssl_storage_port: 12701
server_encryption_options:
     # set to true for allowing secure incoming connections
     enabled: true
     # If enabled and optional are both set to true, encrypted and
unencrypted connections are handled on the storage_port
     optional: false
     # if enabled, will open up an encrypted listening socket on
ssl_storage_port. Should be used
     # during upgrade to 4.0; otherwise, set to false.
     enable_legacy_ssl_storage_port: true
     # on outbound connections, determine which type of peers to
securely connect to. 'enabled' must be set to true.
     internode_encryption: all
     keystore: /usr/share/cassandra/.ssl/cil-intern/server/keystore.jks
     keystore_password: '*'
     truststore: /usr/share/cassandra/.ssl/cil-intern/server/truststore.jks
     truststore_password: '**'

Tested to upgrade to 4.0

2018-10-12 Thread Tommy Stendahl
Hi,

I tested to upgrade to Cassandra 4.0. I had an existing cluster with 3.0.15 and
upgraded the first node but it fails to start due to a NullPointerException.

The problem is the new table option "speculative_write_threshold", when it
doesn’t exist we get a NullPointerException.

I created a jira for this
CASSANDRA-14820.

Regards,
Tommy

Review needed: Resume compresed hints delivery broken in Cassandra 3.0

2018-05-18 Thread Tommy Stendahl

Hi,

If someone have the time to review CASSANDRA-14419: Resume compresed
hints delivery broken
 it would be much
appreciated.

Resume hint delivery is broken in the 3.0 branch, the same problem
existed in 3.x but was fixed by CASSANDRA-11960. This patch is very
similar to CASSANDRA-11960.

I'd like to propose a vote to change to allow any potential contributor to
assign a jira to themselves without needing to be added to the contributors
group first.

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-11950 is an example of how to
get this done with INFRA.

Removing cold_reads_to_omit is not backwards compatible

2015-04-16 Thread Tommy Stendahl

Hi,

I did some testing on cassandra-2.1.5-tentative and found that the
removal of cold_reads_to_omit parameter from the
SizeTieredCompactionStrategy breaks our current CREATE TABLE statements,
we are setting cold_reads_to_omit to 0 but since the parameter was
removed the statement fails. I did some research and found that
cold_reads_to_omit was removed in CASSANDRA-8860 but when I read the
comments in that jira it seams that the idea was to leave the parameter
in 2.1 but ignoring it so existing code shouldn't break. But instead the
parameter was completely removed. I have created CASSANDRA-9203 for this
issue.

Thanks
Tommy
