this is completely off topic, but the groovy project has just submitted a
proposal for incubation [1]. You might be interested to follow this
proposal, because groovy has some dependencies on commons components.

You should still be able to cherry-pick. You'll just have some work to
do to resolve the conflicts. You may be able to increase the rename
detection with:
git config merge.renameLimit
You may also be able to create a patch using git format-patch and
apply it using git am -3.
