Re: [core][discuss] Is it worth to include Stateless JSF / View Pooling concept into MyFaces?

Can it be optional, with a context param ?

On Mon, Feb 4, 2013 at 9:36 AM, Leonardo Uribe lu4...@apache.org wrote:

 Hi

Some time ago, this proposal was submitted to the consideration of this
 list.

[core][proposal] JSF View Pooling (going beyond JSF Stateless Mode)

 http://markmail.org/message/54rb3aphc6txwzbr

I have been thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of this
 technique.

 Advantages:

 - Build view time is cut off, giving a speed improvement per each requests.
Test done shows around 8% improvement in page rendering and in ajax case
the improvement is even better, because in that case the build view time
   has more weight.
 - A lot less objects are allocated.

 Disadvantages:

 - Detection technique to enable this optimization is not 100% fail-safe.
 - It could create memory fragmentation, making garbage collection slower.
 - Higher memory footprint.
 - It is difficult to keep the code synchronized between versions of JSF,
because each concept related to view handling affects how the view pool
 works.
 - The use ui:param uses EL VariableResolver, makes the view non poolable,
because the ValueExpression instances are not stateless in this case.

Do the advantages justify the introduction of this concept? Will users find
the improvement useful or applicable in real projects? or does not worth
the complexity involved and in this case keep thing simple is better?

 Leonardo Uribe

 2012/12/19 Werner Punz werner.p...@gmail.com:
Ok just to be more precise, I have integrated the changes now locally,
 but I
am not committing them yet, because it would mean to introduce another
 set
of attributes to the Calendar yet.

I just want the opinion whether we should do it.
Just to give s small description, the attributes would add alt texts
to the popup calendar and default alt texts are set anyway, the inline
calendar does not have images hence no alt is needed and possible.

The downside of this is that we add another set of attributes:

  popupLeftArrowAlt
  , popupRightArrowAlt
  , popupMonthArrowAlt
  , popupYearArrowAlt
  , popupCloseButtonAlt
  , calendarIconAlt
  , popupWeekOfYearTitle
  , popupWeekOfDateTitle

which is a huge set of new attributes to the already attribute overloaded
  calendar.

So what is your opinion guys, shall we add it or not.
I favor for a +1 here, since accessability is a big plus
and the new attributes are optional in their usage.

  Werner

Am 19.12.12 11:23, schrieb Werner Punz:

  Mhh shall we integrate this?
I personally think it would make sense with some name changes.

  Werner

Am 17.12.12 18:54, schrieb Jon Bionda:

Sorry for what is likely a breach of protocol. This is a suggestion on
how to make the Tomahawk Calendar more WCAG compliant. WCAG being a
standard for gauging if browser based interfaces meet accessibility
requirements primarily for disabled users. I joined the list a while
ago to report an error I found and it was fixed promptly so I continued
to watch the list and see that you are now preparing the next Tomahawk
release, so maybe the timing is right.

We used an older version of Tomahawk (1.0.6) and found the
HtmlInputCalendar component failed the WCAG compliancy tests with
respect to missing some ‘alt’ and ‘title’ attributes on tags generated
by the calendar component. Some time ago, someone who has since left
the company, made it mostly compliant by adding the following 8
properties to the HtmlInputCalendar – I didn’t do the compliancy
 testing
but understand there are different levels of compliancy and these
missing attributes make it fail at a basic level, so there may be more
minor compliance issues which is why I can’t say it would be fully
  compliant.

The properties with hopefully self-describing names are:

   calendarIconAlt

   popupLeftArrowAlt

   popupRightArrowAlt

   popupMonthArrowAlt

   popupYearArrowAlt

   popupCloseButtonAlt

   popupWeekOfYearTitle

   popupWeekOfDateTitle

I’ve looked into forward porting the old changes to the Tomahawk 1.1.14
code base and have provided the code for adding the changes to the
  (org.apache.myfaces.custom.calendar) HtmlInputCalendar and
HtmlCalendarRenderer classes. However, I am having trouble unravelling
the precise changes that were made to the popcalendar.js file ( they
seemed to have got a newer version of the js file and made the changes
on it but I can’t figure out which version get got it from, probably
  obvious to you guys).

A related change is also included and was made because part of WCAG is
supporting screen readers. The text in alt and title attributes
shouldn’t be using short forms of the week days (Sun, Mon, etc.) but
rather their full names (Sunday, Monday, etc.). In the
  HtmlCalendarRenderer.getLocalizedLanguageScript() method, I  see where
they created a parallel String[] to weekDays to contain the full week
day names. This is also added to the initData to be accessible in the
javascript. We only use the calendar in popup mode so no changes were
made to renderInline() but would expect it would also have to be
modified to do a complete job.

I zipped up the changes to the 2 java classes mentioned above (they
 only
contained changed methods and have “WCAG change” comments identifying
the changes), plus a sample properties file for default values and our
popcalendar.js file. This last one is where my knowledge is
insufficient to help much, but maybe you will find it useful to see how
the new properties and full week name array are used. There may be
other changes in the javascript file too as there was an issue related
  to focus.

Thanks for your time and hope this helps.

 served
by the old system. I guess his plan is to have the entire site hosted by
svnpubsub for now, and then gradually move over to the CMS once it is in
place. But I am not sure, Leo can you fill us in here?

svnpubsub is already working, which was the mandatory task to do this year.
All myfaces site has been moved to:

 http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/myfaces/site/publish/

In theory the CMS was built on top of svnpubsub, so I suppose there is a
 relationship between both:

... The publication links in the CMS are essentially merge + commit
operations in subversion which are tied into the live site via svnpubsub.
That means publishing in the CMS is virtually instantaneous. ...

I still have not tried the details about how it works, but in theory you
 need to
put the files inside a subfolder inside publish folder and later this will
 be
consumed by the cms and published properly in the mirror (I'm speculating
 here).

 Leonardo Uribe

Mark,

Thank you. The plot thickens..

If I install the CMS bookmarklet as described in the docs, and try to edit
the Myfaces site, it gives me:

The requested URL /redirect was not found on this server.

Looking at https://cms.apache.org/#bookmark , I don't see us in the list at
all.

Then, there is : https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-5280 , which
references http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/myfaces/site/publish/

I somehow think that we're missing a piece to this puzzle...

I'm going through some of the site documentation, and I can't for the

on the website. I remember a few emails a while back by Leo regarding
svnpubsub.. is this related ? If so, how does it work ?

It seems the wiki is down right now...

+1 on that idea, especially given the jsf.js 2.2 dependency.

Ok, seems we agree now. Because this is exactly what I proposed: do the
clientWindow stuff in 2.2 to a point it is usable and the JSF API is stable
and then port it back to 2.1.x

  Hi

Really the advantage to work in 2.1.x-client-window is if people is
working in 2.2.x, there are chances that by some commit, the code gets
unstable for some time. Since 2.1.x-client-window is JSF 2.1 + client
window api does not contain any additional new feature, you can work
safely with those artifacts. If there is a change there, we can run a
merge and push them in 2.2.x (run that task is fairly simple).

My suggestion is work in 2.1.x or 2.2.x. When client-window api get
stable, we can backport it to 2.1 in one step, knowing the changes
  done and the implications.

  2012/11/16 Mark Struberg strub...@yahoo.de:
I remember this a bit different. But maybe I'm wrong.

Gerhard and I created all that windowId stuff in the first place in
 CODI
and pushed this feature to the spec as well (3 hours late night
 discussion with
Ed at the last con-fess) . The idea was to get this 'right' in JSF-2.2
first and only backport it to 2.1 later.
It's much easier to do all the testing in vanilla because that's
the only way you can get the javax.faces API stable and mature. And
 after that
is done we can backport it. Maintaining this branch is pure pita and
 costs
enormous amount of time without gaining much benefit right now. This is a
sandbox feature - it's by far finished yet. So I personally see no need
 to
maintain it twice. Even worse if it's only an almost 1:1 clone. Pure
 waste
  of manpower.

Let's get this properly done in 2.2.x and if it looks ok port it over
  to 2.1.x

T he JSF-2.0 spec came out in early 2009. There is a
 clarification/bugfix release
2.1 of the spec available since over 2 years now and we actively
 maintain
  MyFaces-2.1.x

Thus I like to suggest moving MyFaces-2.0.x into maintenance mode.

It's purely crazy that we backport any change from 2.1.x to 2.0.x
 still.
This is perfectly fine for heavy bugs of course, but not for new
 enhancements
and 'featuers'. As we've seen recently this introduces bugs which
  are avoidable.

Maintenance mode means that we will fix blockers and security
 vulnerabilities
like we still do in 1.x if required. But we will not do any further
 development.

[+1] move MyFaces-2.0.x into maintenance mode
  [+0] I don't care
[-1] no, we still need the latest and greatest improvements in
 MyFaces-2.0.x

Maximum speed ? That would be unlimited. As for the minimum.. it depends

PS : I'm working on a project based on myfaces as the implementation of

 Hi Everyone,

I was running the tasks needed to get the Trinidad 2.0.1 release out and
now I need a vote as to whether everything looks good or not. I have
committed most of the most recent submitted patches and things look to be
fairly stable. There are a few patches outstanding, but I wanted to put
those into trunk so that they can get some more testing.

This is a very big release with many bug fixes and quite a few fixes to
support the MyFaces checkstyle audits. You will notice the absence of the
component showcase example module. It was decided to remove this module
because it contains code brought in by Maven which is NOT under the Apache
license. The component showcase **IS** available by building the source
 manually.

The last vote was vetoed because some files were missing licenses and
there were some references to external repositories. The new staging
repositories contain fixes for all of these issues including an enhancement
to the base POM file which will automatically run the rat verifications at
build to prevent the licensing issues in the future.

At this time, I would like to ask for a vote, once again, on this
release. All of the following should be ready for review:

 * The generated repository and assembly artifacts [1]
 * The generated source archive [2]
 * The updated svn repository [3]

Please review the artifacts and vote according to the following:

[ ] +1 for community members who have reviewed the bits
 [ ] +0
[ ] -1 for fatal flaws that should cause these bits not to be released,
  and why..

This vote will remain open for at least 72 hours.

 Thanks,

I must agree with Gerhard. The whole point of the sandbox is for this very

 Hi

The problem with move to tomahawk sandbox is those artifact can't
never be released. Do an alpha release give us the chance to know if
the bits are good enough, get more feedback, and later decide what to
do. The truth is some people only test some artifacts after a
release. Do it as an alpha release means ... software that has just
been compiled and ready for its initial test inhouse. I think
 that is enough clear.

  Hi,
Thank you Leonardo for volunteering in the release.
Yes, it would be good discussing the future.

I am still working on the project. Leonardo and I am the only ones at
 the
  moment.
I am trying to work on the project 1 night a week, so the progress is
slow. I think it will be like this for a while.
We have a few issues to fix / features to implement already in the
 issue
tracker, and I am going to add more. There isn't enough feedback, since
 I
guess Html5 stuff is still not supported by every browser and not
 everyone
can use them. So the user profile is more like enthusiasts who are
  experimenting with Html5.
What we could do is providing fallback for old browsers out of the box,
but it is really hard to implement.
About the future: there is a lot to do in this area and I am willing to
work, but I can say I can spare limited time.

That's the intention of this mail. I think we should do an alpha
release. I don't see reasons to block a release.

  I agree.
I am pretty sure a release is good for the project, more people will
 hear
about it; and hopefully we can get some feedback.
  Cheers,

Ok, so can we agree on use a name like
 org.apache.myfaces.STRICT_JSF_2_EL_RESOLVER_COMPATIBILITY?--

I would say yes, so that it leaves space for possible
org.apache.myfaces.STRICT_JSF_* parameters in the future.

Re: [VOTE] fix MYFACES-2552 for 2.0.x and 2.1.x branches

2011-09-21 Thread Grant Smith
My only problem with calling it
org.apache.myfaces.STRICT_JSF_2_COMPATIBILITY is that it's pretty generic.
What if there are other behaviors that come up in the future that also break
strict compatibility ? Do we lump them all under one umbrella ?

How about appending _EL_RESOLVER to make it (more) specific...

  Hi

@Matt Benson: Could you attach at least the fragment with the solution
for MYFACES-2552 ? so I can check it, create a patch for myfaces and
  write a page on:

  https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/MYFACES/Composite+Components

with the explanation and the solution using a custom EL resolver. That

  2011/9/21 Leonardo Uribe lu4...@gmail.com:
  Hi

It should be a param starting with org.apache.myfaces, like
  org.apache.myfaces.STRICT_JSF_2_COMPATIBILITY

The important part is that by default it should be disabled, to
prevent receive over and over the same report.

In theory, it is possible to write a custom EL resolver that check if
  the base object implements
javax.faces.el.CompositeComponentExpressionHolder and if that so, do
the required stuff only on getType(). So, if somebody is writing a
composite component that relies on this behavior, it is possible to
write the fix in a portable way to both Mojarra and MyFaces (thanks to
  CompositeComponentExpressionHolder).

Note the change does not cause any side effects, because nobody relies
on the wrong behavior, and what user wants is components work as
  expected.

  Leonardo Uribe

  2011/9/21 Mark Struberg strub...@yahoo.de:
  Not sure about that.
Does the param start with javax.faces? In this case we should rather
 use an own internal one.

Btw, if it's not in the spec even Mojarra would not be allowed to use a
 proprietary parameter with javax

However, let's simplify the context parameter by giving it a name
relating to JSF 2.2 compatibility. I submitted the final
implementation for Mojarra, so have every right to add the same to
  MyFaces.
