Re: [DDN] Video conference on pc's for free?

2006-09-28 Thread melita zajc
You can only do this if none of you has a Mac because
Skype and MNS Messenger do not support Macs: if Macs
are involved, there is only Yahoo Messenger but am not
sure if it supports video conferencing for multiple
users or just one-to-one video communication.
I do hope it will change soon :)

You can use Yahoo!Messenger for small

 video will give you a
 wonderful world of video communication.

Subject: [DDN] Video conference on pc's for free?

We have 4 people, in 4 separate locations who each
 have an audio-enabled
webcam connected to a pc on a high speed internet
 connection.. We want
to be able to video conference together
simultaneously and we want to do
  it for free.
We know if we all had macs we could do it on
 iChat, but we don't all
  have macs.
So, does anyone know of a service where the 4 of
 us could have a video
  conference gratis?
  Thanks.

For SIP based coms I am not aware of any (free) multichannel conference
tools. However if you are using the h323 protocol to communicate there
is a little known tool called openmcu that is available as standard for
install on a debian machine. H323 is a complex protocol (which is why
everyone is moving to sip), however I have tested this and managed to
set up a 4 way conversation / video link all be it within a single LAN
segment (that is no firewalls routers etc ... etc...)

Please also note (I am being honest here) that openmcu was a proof of
principal and has not been developed much in recent times.

Thank you Lori. As I have researched this, it does not appear that
either AOL or MSN support more than one-to-one video calling.

from our techies to use for this when we did it. Also we only did 2
connections at once, so I'm not sure if these support multiple connections
 at the same time.

Video bloggers sometimes use stickam.com to do this. I
haven't had much luck with it, but I'm also using a
Mac, so PCs may fare better. -andy
