[board-discuss] Re: [tdf-members] Tender to implement an autoupdater for LibreOffice

2021-08-03 Thread Edmund Laugasson
Hello!

Would propose one more requirement:

The solution has to work also in case of regular user without superuser
permissions.

Explanation: in usual cases desktop computers are used by regular users without
superuser permissions. Autoupdater should work also in such cases in mentioned
operating systems. In addition - the autoupdater should update the LibreOffice
for all users and not currently logged in user only.

Thank you!

Well - zooming presentation is the feature. How to cut this into pieces?
Possibly look what MS PowerPoint and Prezi allow to do. Certainly there
are details, different options - I guess we would like to do all this
and probably even more that those programs do not allow in order to more
engage users to use LibreOffice. Well - don't have MS PowerPoint (only
free account in MS OneDrive and there is web-based MS PowerPoint) - only
that referred video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-E2o0H6_pg
(certainly from video portals can be searched more) and Prezi is usable
for everyone via web.

I guess it requires programmatical point of view to understand, what is
the chunk size suitable for developers. Probably one function per chunk,
e.g. scroll mouse up: one; scroll mouse down: second; etc.

Basically I see that I (probably are more interested users) need to
describe all functionality that MS PowerPoint and Prezi have related
with zooming presentation feature and every action that can be done is
one chunk suitable for developers.

Well - probably on way is to look how existing apps mentioned above have
done by integrating zooming presentation feature.

Haven't participated yet - don't know that community, hopefully can find
right words to engage.

That, I guess, needs to be polished already by developers, designers.

Well - TreeSheets (the original) is developed quite slowly, has unique
file format that is not usable in smart devices and still lacks some
features and has some disturbing issues. We can then say that why
zooming presentation while we have Sozi as free software? Somehow MS
PowerPoint decided also duplicate even proprietary Prezi has all it. I
just thought that LibreOffice developer community is more vibrant and
creative - therefore there is more probable to move on faster and
through it make LibreOffice more functional than ever before - this
applies in both zooming presentation and spreadsheets. Shall LibreOffice
have zooming presentation because MS PowerPoint has it? Probably. But
zooming spreadsheet is definitely something that MS Excel doesn't have
but even that could change in future as current mailing list archive
could be read also by Microsoft people...

Such zooming presentation feature could lift Impress onto
whole new level as nowadays big data practically requires. Also focusing
only to important part of presentation - well explained in videos
referred below. As Sozi is free and open-source software - it would be
possible to investigate its approach. It is known that it is based on
SVG (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Vector_Graphics). Hereby
also I propose to build whole graphics stack in LibreOffice solely onto
SVG. Also Inkscape is free and open-source software and possible to look
what and how they do.

Even more - also at least an import feature from .cts file format that
TreeSheets is using. Certainly also export feature to .cts format would
be appreciated. It is free and open-source software - all necessary data
to create import-export filter should be accessible. Also the main
developer Wouter van Oortmerssen is very
responsive - usually on same day will respond.

[tdf-discuss] zooming feature (and much more) in spreadsheet

2020-05-04 Thread Edmund Laugasson
Dear all,

As there will be Adobe Flash abandoned in LibreOffice 7.x then here is
the proposal to implement Treesheets (free and open-source app) features
in LibreOffice Calc, -especially zooming feature (CTRL+mouse scroll),
writing between cells, wrapping cells (F9), inserting new cell into cell
(Insert, CTRL+Enter), nice formatting features, etc (see references
below). There are very nice and powerful features available in
TreeSheets that are missing in LibreOffice Calc but could lift Calc onto
whole new level as nowadays big data practically requires. Also focusing
only to important part of table - well explained in video referred below.

References:

  * main page http://strlen.com/treesheets/
  * tutorial http://strlen.com/treesheets/docs/tutorial.html
  * when opening the app, there will be opened written tutorial with
main features + in app folder there are more tutorials included
(./TS/examples/ folder) that are not covered in manual or video -
worth to look
  * intro video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB-saQZfrsw
  * repository https://github.com/aardappel/treesheets

What do you think - is it feasible in LibreOffice Calc? Certainly it
won't happen overnight and probably not in 7.0 but still these features
are very powerful.

Once (already couple of years ago) I tried to file a feature request in
TDF Bugzilla but then got warning that I need to file a feature request
per feature separately and I just did not have enough time to do that. I
wanted to do a metaentry in Bugzilla and bind all other ideas together
but didn't know how to do that (haven't time to investigate and probably
also not enough rights). Creating bunch of new feature requests was too
overwhelming for me at that time.

[tdf-discuss] epic idea: SVG

2020-05-04 Thread Edmund Laugasson
Dear all,

Got inspired from the conference video below here is the epic idea: what
about using SVG as new default format in LibreOffice? It might be not
feasible but who knows - just propose. SVG is itself XML-based already,
supports also well layers. SVG seems to be support embedding also audio,
video (at least Sozi has plugin for that, see also
https://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/About.html and main page
https://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/). I am not familiar with SVG so deeply
but just propose an idea. It might not feasible in all aspects (e.g.
databases in Base, spreadsheets in Calc) but at least some (e.g.
presentations in Impress, text documents in Writer, especially drawings
in Draw) - at least as an export option. But nowadays are very
impressive ideas based on SVG - some also talked in that conference
video in below. SVG could be more easily compatible also in web browsers
and not to mention that directly usable in Sozi to quickly create
impressive presentations (especially powerful when using layers). When
such zooming presentation features come to Impress, it would be possibly
easier to achieve it based on SVG. Certainly I do not underestimate ODF
family.

At least SVG export seems to be missing for now, only PNG. Certainly PNG
should remain but SVG should come.

[tdf-discuss] zooming feature in presentation

2020-05-04 Thread Edmund Laugasson
Dear all,

Does anybody have any information about potential zooming feature
arriving into LibreOffice Impress? It is currently available in
well-known Prezi (https://prezi.com/) and now also in MS PowerPoint
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-E2o0H6_pg). Certainly there is also
free and open-source software available for prezi-like presentation:
Inkscape (https://inkscape.org/) + Sozi (https://sozi.baierouge.fr/).
But still - why LibreOffice Impress could not support as competitors
already support?

As there will be Adobe Flash abandoned in LibreOffice 7.x then here is
the proposal to adopt prezi/sozi-like presentation style also in
LibreOffice Impress. As far as I read from
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/7.0 I do not see such
feature planned.

What you think? Is it worth to add such feature to LibreOffice Impress?

Thank you,
Edmund Laugasson

There is yet another issue - the
https://www.libreoffice.org/download/portable-versions/ website update
is also delayed and there should be checked directly the download folder
instead of website in order to get information of latest version - most
people do not know that and for them there is still no new version.

Would also bring out that portable MS Windows version is an easy and
quick way to introduce/use LibreOffice without installing it and we even
do not have enough permissions for that.

Re: [tdf-discuss] outdated LibreOffice Portable (MS Windows)

2019-03-25 Thread Edmund Laugasson
Dear all,

Sounds like MS Windows version of LibreOffice Portable is not maintained
(or very slowly...)? Currently seems to be 6.1.4 but 6.1.5 is almost 2
months out from 6.1 series and from 6.2 series already second 6.2.2 is
out. In case of Linux AppImage at least during couple of days after
original release comes out next version but not for MS Windows. It's sad
as many of users do not have installation permission under MS Windows
(e.g. computers in companies, lecturers in visiting organizations) and
would like to use the portable version. As we know - the MS Windows is
widely used - so spreading LibreOffice would mean especially spreading
it under MS Windows and especially in the situation where there is no
administrative rights to install software.
What can we do to improve this situation?

Yes, that is also one way.

Yes, homepage. Also link to geopraphical location on the map could be
used next of postal address (possibly autodetection according entered
address like Google Calendar does).

Even HTML would be fine.

Long list is currently at
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/professional-support/ website where
all the names are in long list and it is not very comfortable to search
from that list.

I mean the address http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/professional-support/
Filtering is not currently possible as there is just long list of names
and addresses in two columns. Yes - I can use CTRL+F but it is not sort
of filtering actually...
If there could be created a drop-down menu for filtering in the
beginning of that long list of names then I would understand that there
is some kind of filtering but even that would not be as comfortable as
layers on map.

Re: [tdf-discuss] LO contributors map

2016-08-09 Thread Edmund Laugasson
Dear all,

Would it be possible to add also hyperlink, address, other contacts than
e-mail - to map? Currently it looks not very good if address is added to
name itself.

I propose to add such custom fields whenever someone would like to fill
them. Probably it would be easier to allow to add custom fields and if
hyperlink is identified then it shows it. You may also turn off any link
identification for possible security reasons.

Also I propose to move that map to TDF server and make it accessible at
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/professional-support/ website. It
would be much better and more usable than long list.

One development idea. Probably it would be possible to add two layers
onto map: /certified developers/ and /certified migration
professionals/? Then it would be easily possible to filter out certain
group of professionals according interest. For compatibility reasons the
list can also remain accessible e.g. at sub-page. This in turn requires
also to improve the entry and add certain values there to make filtering
possible.

Actually it would be good to make authentication easier - e.g. use same
identity as I log in other TDF-related environments. Here comes probably
another development idea - create a TDF ID which authenticates from
TDF's OpenLDAP server.

As there suppose to be full support for ODF in newest MS Office (MSO) -

regardless of that court case. Have anyone tested ODF support with

Using e.g. MS OneDrive (https://onedrive.live.com/) among partners would
solve the online cooperation issue - then the same software and
fileformats are available for everyone.

As there is no online version (yet) of LibreOffice but there is MSO
online version (MS OneDrive) then people can use that. And it seems that
when the online version of LibreOffice comes then you have to set it up
in your private cloud in order to use it together online with partners.
Actually one instance of online LibreOffice is but not free -
https://www.rollapp.com/search?query=libreoffice

It is always better to promote ODF usage than OOXML whatever version.
Due to vendor lock-in I suspect that full compatibility with OOXML in
LibreOffice will never happen. Even if OOXML claims to be free - it is
still quite challenging to implement its support. Can anyone confirm the
full specification availaibility of OOXML? As MSO is using modified
version of OOXML and these modifications, as far as I know, are not
freely available then making full compatibility would be really
challenging...

Recent versions of Microsoft Office (2013 and 2016) at least claims to
support the strict OOXML format, and that's why I asked my original
question: Does LibreOffice target strict OOXML when I choose the
"Office Open XML" format when saving a file??? Is this documented
somewhere? Is someone managing this?

[tdf-discuss] LibreOffice PPA

2015-12-23 Thread Edmund Laugasson

Dear all,

Would like to ask about up-to-date LibreOffice PPA - would be there any?
Even Y-PPA could not find any.

The https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa seems to be
outdated.

Is there any TDF official LibreOffice PPA planned?

Best Regards,
Edmund

[tdf-discuss] LibreOffice Online

2015-12-22 Thread Edmund Laugasson

Dear all,

I searched:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=libreoffice%20online%20real%20time%20collaboration=lm
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=libreoffice+online+collabora=lm

Also I read:
https://www.collaboraoffice.com/libreoffice-online-questions-answered-what-who-how-and-when/
https://fedoramagazine.org/libreoffice-online-announced-by-collabora/

What is Collabora Office (https://www.collaboraoffice.com/)? Is this the
LibreOffice Online? Probably not but it looks very much like
LibreOffice. I know that Collabora and also IceWarp are developing
LibreOffice Online.

*
**Still the question remains whether LibreOffce Online would support
real-time writing (collaboration) or not?*

Is there any limit of participants doing collaboration?

Also people are asking from me about storage space - would it be similar
like MS OneDrive and Google Drive - 15 GB for free
I did not dare to say that in the beginning the LibreOffice Online would
be with reduced functionality compared with desktop version...

Then
https://www.collaboraoffice.com/collabora-and-owncloud-announce-partnership-and-release-code-for-libreoffice-online-developers/
- it seems that CODE is yet another online office suite? Or would this
be LibreOffice Online? Using ownCloud will solve the storage need and
much better way than just 15 GB as Microsoft or Google offer. But
certainly not all can set up own instance of ownCloud...

Anyway - does anybody know some kind of roadmap when at least we can
speak about fully functional LibreOffice Online?

Yours faithfully,
Edmund Laugasson

Re: [tdf-discuss] LibreOffice Online

2015-12-22 Thread Edmund Laugasson

Thank you for the answers!

LibreOffice Online will not be associated to an online storage space
(unless provided by a third party, such as a telecom company). TDF is
not going to enter that product arena, which has completely different
objectives (advertising, or even others).

As I read from the
https://www.collaboraoffice.com/libreoffice-online-questions-answered-what-who-how-and-when/

/Will it be hosted by The Document Foundation?/

/ Yes: It will be hosted by The Document Foundation,/

... and there will be no storage space then there is a question whether
there would be possible to use external (cloud) storages?
E.g. Dropbox, Google Drive, MegaSync, MS OneDrive etc
 but also SSH, FTP(s),
WebDAV, SMB/CIFS etc network storages.

Thank you,
Edmund

Re: [tdf-discuss] LibreOffice Online

2015-12-22 Thread Edmund Laugasson

Thank you for the answers!

/Will it be hosted by The Document Foundation?/
/ Yes: It will be hosted by The Document Foundation,/

i.e. source code will be available from TDF online repositories

If there could be TDF instance without storage but with external
cloud/network storage ability then it would be very appreciated. Why?
Because then there will be always up-to-date, fully functional and
reliable instance working.

This could be anywhere, not immediately at TDF server directly but for
users it would be good to know that there is an instance, which TDF is
managing and which is reliable and always up-to-date.

If it is not possible then it is not. But this is the behaviour what
people expect and asking from me.
If it relies completely own instance then I hope it would be easy
(without any complications) to set up and also possible to do at hosting
service. Also web-based and configurable upgrade would be appreciated
(announce before upgrade or upgrade automatically).

... and there will be no storage space then there is a question whether
there would be possible to use external (cloud) storages?

Storage will be provided by the organization hosting LibreOffice Online
(which is not going to be TDF).

This would be great if different organizations would offer the service.

But I asked about ability (whether this will be implemented or not) to
open/save from/to already existing and widely used cloud storages
(Dropbox, Google Drive, MegaSync, MS OneDrive etc) and also network
drives (SSH, FTP, WebDAV, SMB/CIFS etc). If LibreOffice Online is able
only open/save from/to local storage then it is heavily depending on the
place where the instance is installed. But if there would be opportunity
to open/save network storages then it would be not dependent on the
place where LibreOffice Online instance is installed and this might even
have no storage space at all.

This means that if I set up the instance of LibreOffice Online - this
can be done with or without giving also storage space in my server. Even
if I have the space in my server to share - most users have already some
cloud storages (Dropbox, Google Drive, MegaSync, MS OneDrive etc) and
would like to use them.

Similar functionality has been already implemented in Rollapp with
LibreOffice (which is actually already opportunity to use LibreOffice
online) - https://www.rollapp.com/search?query=libreoffice - so I
thought it would probably also natively implemented in LibreOffice
Online. If not yet planned then I propose to plan because it will
increase flexibility and solve the storage problem.
But as you can see the Rollapp is not very much up-to-date and they use
a bit outdated versions... This is what happens if there is no
convenient way to upgrade the software.

If LibreOffice Online will be only available as a part of ownCloud then
it is also good to know. Then it is up to ownCloud's ability to connect
other cloud and/or network storages.

Also currently ownCloud offers small scale (up to 5 people)
collaborative editing then it would be quite logical that LibreOffice
Online will be part of ownCloud. There are also Dropbox integration with
MS OneDrive - why not offer similar alternative.

Again, it is too early to discuss these topics in a public mailing list.

I see. I just got a lot of questions and was enforced to ask from you as
I could not find answers from online.
