After some testing using laptops with Windows (XP and 7) and Ubuntu, the
automatic numbering and cross reference problems appears to be ONLY and Mac
OS 10.5, 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 problem.
I cannot reproduce the problem using Windows or Ubuntu and would appreciate
if someone could tell me if

Bsd apparently has a sub-set of the commands available in GnuLinux so
sometimes things probably do have to be re-written a bit for Mac and FreeBsd
(and the rest). On the GnuLinux side if it works in Ubuntu then it probably
doesn't even need
