This helps, Thank you.
Now my expire-tool.sh looks like:

MAIL_PLUGINS=${MAIL_PLUGINS//mail_log/}
exec ${0%.sh} $@
Maybe wiki should be updated to consider this trick ?
How about this:

Just cosmetic though :-)

Both human readable timestamps are equal as ctime() returns a pointer

It looks like the mail_plugins setting outside protocol has no effect.

These are the settings from the protocol imap section.
Oh, right. That's because of how it's implemented in v1.2. Kind of ugly,
but I don't know if I'll bother

My guess is that mail_location is not respected
I encountered the same problem with Debian Lenny, so I now recompile
the package myself. It works well.
Same here on Ubuntu 8.10. However it doesn't compile out of the box.
I use the following patch for the debian rules file to make it work.
diff -upr dovecot-1.2.beta4.orig/debian/rules

See here:

Whenever dovecot is stopped while a dict process is running I see
Fatal: io_loop_handle_add: epoll_ctl(1, 11): Bad file descriptor
in the error log.
The following patch fixes this for me. I'm sure there is a better way though.

and in second
case mailbox auto-detection makes it working?

I'm trying to follow the instructions from:
http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Expire
for the BDB backend.
Everything is set up as indicated, but when I run:
dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool
I get back:
Error: read(/var/run/dovecot/dict-server) failed: Remote
No idea - I installed from RPM. Is there a way to check?
Check your dovecot error log. If BDB is not enabled you should see:
dovecot: dict: Unknown dict module: db
Anyone know how to fix this?
In reply to myself, some more info...
Using Google I found some hints that maybe the cache size is too
small... but how can that be fixed? Or... since this is BDB and the
machine is a sparc64, it's some memory alignment issue?

Anybody has this working?
Yes.
plugin {
expire = spamassassin/SPAM 1
expire_dict = proxy::expire
}
For me it works by using '.' as hierarchy separator. So in your case expire =
spamassassin.SPAM 1 should work. This could be different when using namespaces,
which I don't.
