I went back and did it all again and this time I got a very nice looking

Anyway, thanks to whoever put together the Vista theme; it looks great.

 Hello all,

I've recently started playing with Vista to see if I can live with it; of
course DQSD is a prerequisite for that :) I have two issues:

 1. (Functional) Closing the searchbar (right-click, choose Close Toolbar)
 crashes the Explorer process.

 1. (Cosmetic) I found in an archived message that someone had made theme
files for Vista, and indeed they help make the DQSD bar look better in the
Vista taskbar. However it would look much better still if it didn't quite
span the width of the taskbar.

I've attached a piece of a screenshot (having no idea if attachments work
with this list or not) showing the DQSD bar next to the Windows Address
toolbar, which leaves a few pixels of taskbar above and below itself. If
the DQSD bar could do that it would look pretty good. (I tried playing
 with localsearch.css but I couldn't find a way...)

I did the theme, with help from several folks, especially Matt B. It IS
an improvement, isn't it? Now if I just had this as a 64-bit version,
I'd be happy. Unfortunately, I can't run DQSD these days since there
isn't a 64-bit one. I tried to do it myself, but no joy.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista RC1 error message with DQSD 4.0 rc2

2007-01-11 Thread David Blume

Thanks for the quick reply, Kim!

Yes, using the default Google search wasn't working.

No, I hadn't changed any preferences yet. I don't even see
useExternalBrowser in the default preferences.js at all.

What did fix my problem was setting IE7 as my default browser. Only then
did I discover that I cannot reset FireFox as my default browser. (
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=352424 which is not RESOLVED in
2.0.0.1)

Looks like I'm stuck with IE7, but at least DSQD works again.

I can't get used to using dic instead the postfix : for dictionary...

Thank you!

[DQSD-Users] Vista RC1 error message with DQSD 4.0 rc2

2007-01-10 Thread David Blume

I use DQSD on all my XP system, and love it. On my one Vista system (RC1,
build 5600), I've installed DQSD 4.0 rc2. (I also installed the
DSQD-Vista.zip themes, and they look great, but have no affect on the
following bug.)

When searching for a regular search term, I get the following message in an
Internet Explorer Script Error window:

Line: 78
Char: 5
Error: Unspecified error.
Code: 0
Url: file:///F:/Program%20Files/Quick%20Search%20Deskbar/search.htm
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page? (Yes) (No)

Regardless of how I answer, a browser window does not come up. (I've set
Firefox 2.0.0.1 as my default browser.) However, most other DQSD features
do work. ! reloads. dqsd brings up the sourceforge page. right-clicking
brings up the calendar. clicking on the chevrons brings up the menu of
keywords. ?, however, brings up a window that says, Cannot find
documentation (But I don't care about that.)

Is this a known issue? I checked the FAQ, but Vista does not appear there.
I'd be happy to help debug the issue if I'm the only one who can reproduce
it. (But I'd need guidance in gathering what you need.)

Thanks,
David

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista

2006-12-18 Thread Charlie Russel
Correct. Users running Vista will need to take the provided files and
substitute them for localsearch.css and theme.css. Our installation
should simply put them into the dqsd directory. Actually, the
localsearch.css should be renamed to localsearch_vista.css before we
make it available to folks so that it doesn't overwrite their own
version. Those who already have localsearch.css will want to merge their
customizations in with the provided css file, and then name it
'localsearch.css'.

In my working with these, I found it best to copy the files to my own
directory, make all the changes, and then copy them back under \program
files\quick search deskbar. You'll get a couple of UAC prompts, but
that's always going to be the case with Vista.

Charlie.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista

2006-12-18 Thread Charlie Russel
Kim -
I agree, I thought I should have been able to get this whole thing to work
with just theme.css. But some things just wouldn't take right and it ended up
looking ugly. Specfically, the button wouldn't change colour, and a couple
of other minor things. I'm not at all sure which one overrides the other. Maybe
this could be done entirely in localsearch.css? I didn't actually try that
scenario. But definitely theme.css alone wasn't sufficient.

I confess, this was just me poking around, no real knowledge about what was
happening where. And a lot of trial and error (which is a PITA with UAC turned
on, I can tell you!)

I don't by any means think these are definitive versions. Just my best guess by
the time I gave up at 1 AM this morning. g The one thing I'm sure of though
is that it is WAY better than any of the existing themes in Vista. (You really
have to see the ugliness to appreciate it how bad it is.)

 Hi guys,

I found some time to look into the menu -- it's built from configure.xml
 in
 your searches directory.

That script contains boatloads of logic to set up the menu, including a
 set
of calls to add themes in buildConfigureMenu().

It bothers me a little that the Vista theme requires changes to both
localsearch.css and theme.css... Could this be re-made to require changes
only in theme.css? Maybe that puts more pressure on the other themes,
though, I don't know 100% how this stuff fits together.

Correct. Users running Vista will need to take the provided
files and substitute them for localsearch.css and
theme.css. Our installation should simply put them into the
dqsd directory. Actually, the localsearch.css should be
renamed to localsearch_vista.css before we make it
available to folks so that it doesn't overwrite their own
version. Those who already have localsearch.css will want to
merge their customizations in with the provided css file, and
  then name it 'localsearch.css'.

In my working with these, I found it best to copy the files
to my own directory, make all the changes, and then copy them
  back under \program files\quick search deskbar. You'll get a
couple of UAC prompts, but that's always going to be the case
  with Vista.

Hi, Kim.

Yes, my localsearch was empty before I started. The one thing that simply would
NOT change in theme.css was the on the button. It stayed doggedly black,
which doesn't work on a very dark grey background.

I'll play around a bit more in a couple of days, when I have some time, and
maybe I can get it all back to where it is done in theme.css. If I can figure
out what is going on with the chevrons. I agree, that would be best. Then we
simply ship the theme_vista.css plus the two bmp files, and folks can manually
copy the theme_vista.css to theme.css and be done.

 Hi Charlie,

Right. It seems the load order is:

 1) search.css
 2) theme.css
 3) localsearch.css

so localsearch.css should only be involved at the very last stage.

Was your localsearch.css empty to begin with?

Maybe this could be done entirely in
  localsearch.css?

I think it should be the other way around -- theme.css should be the only
point of change. localsearch.css is for user-specific mods, and should
 override both search.css and theme.css.

The one thing I'm sure of though is that it is
WAY better than any of the existing themes in Vista. (You
really have to see the ugliness to appreciate it how bad it is.)

Heh. I keep getting the blue XP theme because I install as administrator
 and
run DQSD as another user, and that really looks crap with my classic
 theme.

 Cheers,

Nor mine. I wonder if there's a decent online reference for it. I'll
have to look around. It's all a nuisance, of course, since I don't have
a 64-bit dqsd to work with and only have one machine running 32-bit
Vista. All others are on 64-bit.

Give me a few days to poke around. I can probably sort something. Now
that I've gotten pretty much everything looking at least reasonable, I
won't have so many variables to deal with. I probably made too many
changes at once and lost track of something.

Thank goodness for gvim - doing all this editing in notepad would be
seriously painful.

Here's the actual spec: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/ -- excruciating.
W3Schools: http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp -- usually short and
sweet, but low on basic ideas

FWIW, I removed everything from localsearch.css and copied the *button
classes into theme.css, and it worked, instantly. I get a little red
chevron, at least.

Maybe it's a Vista thing?

I think the idea was to name the CSS of your choice 'theme.css', and restart

You may want to keep the empty theme.css around, as I believe it constitutes

Yeah, that works. But you can't use the right click menu to change themes. But
since that doesn't work in Vista anyway, I guess that's not too important.
(Permissions problem with UAC turned on.)

OK, I've got a bit map that works. Now I just need to figure out how to have a
calendar popup that isn't seriously ugly and light blue. A good background for
Vista might be a nice light grey - it at least wouldn't look odd. Though I
suppose a darker grey would be more in line with what the toolbar is.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista

2006-12-12 Thread Charlie Russel
I can take the necessary screenshots if someone can define what they
need a screen shot of. The problem is that the task bar in Vista is a
completely different colour scheme than anything XP.

The color schemes are actually just images
(screenshots )of a particular xp theme and some css.
I don't have Vista either so someone would need to
take some screenshots and modify the css to make it
 look nice on Vista.

Sorry, I've been swamped with 'life'. I inadvertently introduced a problem

many have faced, and it also has ballooned the number of included
searches to well over 300. At current count I believe there are about
375, and I have another 10 or so left in my upload queue, waiting for
  CVS to work properly again.

You can still see the latest stable build (3.1.9.2) on the DQSD.net
  homepage here:
http://www.dqsd.net/
Which soon, hopefully, will be replaced by the 4.x build.

   Bethany,

John is correct, it hasn't been abandoned by any means. Kim
and others have done the lion's share of the build/release
work over the last couple of years while some of us have been AWOL.

Is there some feature you really wish it had that it doesn't
have now? That's usually how improvements on this little
proggie happen, a user suggests a change and someone has
enough interest in the same feature to dig in and make it happen.

Personally, I still use it several times a day. But I'm busy
enough with life and other projects (that pay better), and am
content enough with its functionality to simply use it, and
usually avoid the temptation to enhance it.

   Glenn

incorrect.

though the main developers have become very busy over
   recent years. but
there is some work on releasing a 4.0 version that uses a
   hosting DLL to
help work around some security issues introduced by WinXP SP2.

also, DQSD is so feature rich, there haven't been many
   fresh ideas proposed
or implemented lately and development has basically taken
   on a maintenance
posture. the only thing i wish DQSD could do that it
   doesn't do now is mow
my lawn.

Hi,
Am I correct in assuming that this software has become
   abandonware? There
have been no updates for quite a long time now. I have
   really enjoyed using
it and hate to see it go.

Sincerely,
Bethany

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista?

2006-07-25 Thread Glenn Carr
I'm not running Vista, but I would suggest the 4.0 branch for testing.

If you can't build, I can post an unofficial build later tonight.

Is anyone testing DQSD on Vista? I'm running Vista on my laptop. Is the
 4.0 branch recommended?

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista?

2006-07-25 Thread Kim Gräsman
Glenn, Douglas,

Actually, the dqsd-40 branch is dead, and the mainline is now
work-in-progress for 4.0.

I used dqsd-40 for experimenting with the 4.0 stuff before we merged it
back. I'm not sure if a branch can be closed in CVS?

At any rate, HEAD is the latest!

Cheers,
- Kim
