I've decided to pare things down a bit here and am looking to sell both
of my L7s, an MN75 and several of my WH7s.
The amps are in great cosmetic shape, come with tubes but will require
a PSU recapping. Was going to upgrade them with the Harbach boards but
life gets in the way of projects.
I am considering buying a Drake TR-4C for AM HF use. Is this a good choice? I’m
not sure of the condition of the transceiver at this time.

Hi Gary,
Sorry to so abrupt, but in a word, NO.
These nice rigs were designed for SSB use, AM is a far afterthought
to satisfy the folks of the day who thought AM was not really being
replaced by something better. You run the risk of destroying your final
tubes if you try to get more than
I agree with Al.

Hi Gary,
Sorry to so abrupt, but in a
Exactly.
While it has a decent receiver, a better combo, would be an r-4A or
similar, and any ot the Tx's Al mentioned. AM is definitely NOT a
4-line strength...really is on the weakness side in my opinion. The R4a
with the tube detector sounds better than the B version with solid state
Gary,
I have several Drakes including a TR4C and NO without out modification they are
NOT a good AM transmitter. IF AM is what you want to do, find a real AM
transmitter such as a Johnson (Name your posion) I own a Johnson Viking-II for
AM, or Heathkit DX-40, 60, 100, there are old Broadcast
