: [Drakelist] Neutralization
I have a Drake T4 that needs neutralization . I have tried
the approach given in the manual and while it seems to work
I thought I might use this as an opportunity to learn how
to do what is called a Cold Tube neutralization where you
do not apply High Voltage
Lots of good on what I was looking for. I have done the neutralization
the way it is outlined in the manual and think I have it pretty good.
This T4 was a rust bucket basket case when I got it and it had several
burned up cathode resistors, two in the Driver cathode cicuit alone and
one in

IMHO, neutralizing the finals with the plate and screen
voltages removed is
the quickest way to neutralize

Mike,
The 1963 ARRL Handbook has the following which I have used on my TR3 when
I owned it. They are speaking of a grid driven amp, but it is the same for
a GG which is what Drake has in their final stage. I just used a
receiver, but you can make the device if you care to, but be careful.

One detail. The Drake 4 Line finals are ALL grid driven, Class AB1,
not grounded grid.
Definitely be careful when disconnecting and reconnecting those Plate
and Screen leads from the ceramic feedthrus. They WILL break and they
ARE a pain to replace, even when you can find them!
Hello-
I neutralize my Drake's by:
1. Disconnect screen voltage to finals.
2. Tune up transmitter PA as normal on 10 meters into a dummy load,
although there is no discernable output on wattmeter. Listen to the signal on a
receiver. Tune up transmitter for max signal in

This works well, just be VERY careful removing the screen voltage from
the Final IF you are unsoldering from the feedthrough capacitor on the
shield wall. They are susceptible to overheating, and cracking, if too
much force is used when removing the wire. Not fun to replace,
