RE: [drakelist] L4B PS xformer
WF2U [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Let's see: L-4B original rated input is 2000W. at 50% typical efficiency, the output is 1000W. So, at 1500W output you're going to gain 10xlog 1500/1000=1.7 dB. Considering 1 S-point equals 6 dB, you're going to gain less than 1/3 of one S-point on the receiving end. You figure it out whether it's worth the expense and the reduced life of the pair of 3-500Z's... 73, Meir WF2U Landrum, SC Drake 2-B/2-BQ, TR-3/RV-3, TR-4, R-4B/T-4X, L-4B. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Joe Roth Sent: Monday, January 02, 2006 7:30 PM To: drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Subject: [drakelist] L4B PS xformer Joe Roth [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Happy New Year all Drake gurus! I seek your vast insight on the L4B. I am rebuilding my L4B's power supply. I have heard of some replacing the stock transformer with a Peter Dahl type which gives higher plate voltage. The goal is to bring the amp's RF output to 1500w. Has anyone done this mod/upgrade? Is it worth the bother? Opinions, please. BTW- My present transformer is fine, I believe. RE: [drakelist] TR5
WF2U [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- AN-RT-88-GRC? This is not even correct as military nomenclature. Something could be AN/GRC-XX or AN/GRC-XXX (x for the equipment number), which is a group of equipment. A component of the AN/GRC-XXX could be an RT-XX, RT-XXX or RT-, where RT stands for receiver/transmitter or transceiver. When referring to such a component, it'd be : RT-XXX/GRC or RT-XXX/GRC-XXX, designation the equipment group the component is a part of. And finally, there is no such animal as an RT-88 in the GRC or any other series group. The closest to that number is the RT-77/GRC-9, part of the AN/GRC-9 equipment group, and it's a completely unrelated to anything by Drake, besides, it was manufactured from 1945 to the mid '50's... (it happens to be a nice 15W tube transmitter-receiver combo, covering 80, 40 and 30 M, CW and AM...) I have the feeling that the person you heard was either pulling someone's leg, fibbing or simply had no idea what he's getting... 73, Meir WF2U Landrum, SC Drake and military radio user/collector -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Jack Wilson Sent: Saturday, November 12, 2005 9:54 PM To: Drakelist Subject: [drakelist] TR5 Jack Wilson [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hi, Heard a QSO tonight where someone was talking about picking up five of the military versions of the TR5. The guy said that the number on the rigs was AN-RT-88-GRC and that they all came with the power supply which was like the PS7. Color was military green. He said that he could not find anything on the web or anyplace else about the history was on these things. Does anyone know? RE: [drakelist] 6146/12JB6
The tube equivalent to the 6146 but with 12.6 V heater is the 6159. It usually turns up cheaper than the 6146, as the number is unfamiliar to most. I bought 4 new in the box Amperex manufactured 6159's for $30. I've seen them for even less. Incidentally, I bought them for spares for a military surplus HF amplifier which uses them, and not for my TR-3, TR-4, and the T4-X, which are tubed with the original types. 73, Meir WF2U Landrum, SC -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of ALAN CHANDLERSent: Tuesday, May 24, 2005 8:27 PMTo: drakelist@www.zerobeat.netSubject: [drakelist] 6146/12JB6 If someone wants to do the three tube 12JB6 conversion, there is a 12.6 volt heater version of the 6146. RE: [drakelist] Drake 2B
A few years ago at a small local hamfest (still lived in NY State) someone had a nice Drake 1A receiver for sale for $85! The owner was busy talking to someone about some other equipment, and not wanting to wait (thinking I may be missing something else...), I walked away and looked at stuff on a few other vendors' tables. I ended up buying a nice Hammarlund HQ-170VHF receiver for $100 and the seller took out another box and said: this goes with the receiver. In the box there were the Heathkit MT-1 Cheyenne transmitter and MR-1 Comanche receiver mobile twins with manuals and power supply.
