No vesafb was not likely a problem.
I specified vga=791 as a global option in /etc/lilo.conf, and it caused the
problem. After I replaced vga=791 with video=800x600,

It changes in subsequent boots of kms (I'm using kms only for a quite a while,
I only booted in ums a few times after I noticed this behavior, for I suspected
it could be kms only).

What appears to be the same crash happens with scorched3d on my r770 as well,
with both 2.6.32 and 2.6.34. The common factor appears to be Mesa 7.8.x, right
up to 7.8.2 (head of the 7.8 branch)

If disabling vesafb fixes your problem, it means vesafb->radeon handoff does

Looks to me like that's because decompress_with_blit adds a
PIPE_BIND_TRANSFER_READ bind flag (apart from the PIPE_BIND_RENDER_TARGET
flag), which the r300g driver thinks it
