[Bug 36072] New: celestia causes kernel oops when allocation a lot of memory (for textures)
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36072 Summary: celestia causes kernel oops when allocation a lot of memory (for textures) Product: Drivers Version: 2.5 Kernel Version: 2.6.38 Platform: All OS/Version: Linux Tree: Mainline Status: NEW Severity: high Priority: P1 Component: Video(DRI - non Intel) AssignedTo: drivers_video-...@kernel-bugs.osdl.org ReportedBy: aceli...@atlas.sk Regression: Yes The celestia program often allocates a lot of memory (like 1.5GB on my 2GB machine with 3GB swap) for its textures. I don't know where it stores them (probably not Video memory), but it seems in system RAM, because swap is used much. Sometimes when this happens the kernel crashes. After that I can only sync and reboot the machine with alt-sysrq commands. I have only noticed this with kernel 2.6.38.x, not before. I was using the OSS ati driver 6.14.1, with mesa 7.10.2. All including the kernel seft compiled (for AMD fam10h CPU). I do not understand the first line of the log. Where can I increase the vmalloc size. Is the on the kernel command line? But it should not crash the kernel in any case, just the program. Here is the kernel log: May 19 21:26:52 coolbox kernel: vmap allocation for size 178982912 failed: use vmalloc=size to increase size. [Bug 30922] [radeon] Noisy fan with Radeon R600 and Toshiba Satellite L500-164
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30922 --- Comment #4 from Denis Washington den...@online.de 2011-05-27 09:30:10 --- I have talked to Dave Airlie on IRC (#radeon at freenode) today and it seems that my assumption that thermal sensor access is needed for proper fan control is wrong. Rather, the GPU seems to do fan control automatically and can only be influenced by the driver by giving a new policy table to the graphics card's BIOS. The radeon driver doesn't currently do this, however, and relies on the BIOS' defaults, which however seem to be bad on my machine. This is why my fan mostly runs in full speed. Dave says he thinks that there's some of the code lying around inside AMD to do proper fan control setup, but still in need of a lot of review. If this is the case, I would be happy to test the code once it's published in git. (Please correct me if I am wrong about anything I've written here.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are watching the assignee of the bug. -- vRanger cuts backup time in half-while increasing security. [Bug 18872] [RADEON:KMS:R100:SUSPEND] suspend to ram problems
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18872 Maté mate.ta...@gmail.com changed: What|Removed |Added CC||mate.ta...@gmail.com --- Comment #11 from Maté mate.ta...@gmail.com 2011-05-23 21:10:09 --- Same problem with vanilla 2.6.39 on debian testing. At the STR process the backlight goes off shortly but remains lit during suspend. The screen goes black and stays black when out of suspend. Some flickering on/off when entering and leaving STR. There's short harddrive activity when coming out of suspend [1]. Also, suspend- and power-led blink/lit as they are supposed to. The box is then locked up, not reacting to keyboard input or even sysrq. Hard power off required. [1] not sure about this one There's a switch in /etc/default/acpi-support: #RADEON_LIGHT=true Commented or uncommented doesn't change the behavior during STR. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are watching the assignee of the bug. -- What Every C/C++ and Fortran developer Should Know! [Bug 34772] [radeon] [R300] GPU lockups with when KMS is enabled
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34772 --- Comment #9 from Rogério Brito rbr...@ime.usp.br 2011-05-21 09:16:28 --- Hi, Michel. On Fri, May 20, 2011 at 12:11, bugzilla-dae...@bugzilla.kernel.org wrote: --- Comment #6 from Michel Dänzer mic...@daenzer.net 2011-05-20 12:11:38 --- (In reply to comment #1) Anyway, things are *way* better with 2.6.38 than with 2.6.39, as with 2.6.39 the kernel doesn't even get the colors correctly---everything that should be red becomes blue and so forth (any kind of endianness problem?). That's probably nothing to do with the kernel directly but endianness bugs in the X driver when acceleration is not available. OK, then that's a separate issue. Good to know. It would be interesting if you could bisect what broke acceleration with radeon.agpmode=-1. Oooh, I guess that I made some mess in your head here, taking into account the other messages of us. To clear things up: When I use 2.6.38, it works mostly OK if I use radeon.agpmode=-1. It is sufficiently stable to the point that I told you that this setting was OK. But, in fact, if I play a video with mplayer, then it always (so far, 100% reproducible) causes those GPU lockups, but the computer is still accessible via the network, so that I can take the logs etc. If, instead, I use 1 instead of -1, then, even with kernel 2.6.38, I get those lysergide-like :-) pictures that I put on my homepage (but, for documentation purposes, I am thinking of uploading here as attachments, as I am quite short of space there). With kernel 2.6.39, I have not been able to get anything working, whether or not I pass any option to the kernel. Summary: * 2.6.38 with KMS and agpmode=-1: OK, up to me trying to play some video, then GPU lockups. * 2.6.38 with KMS and agpmode=1: GPU lockups a few seconds after X loads (it *does* show up, but locks up a few seconds latter). * 2.6.39 with KMS and agpmode=-1: Not OK, even if I don't use anything accelerated (problems with colors and software rendering). So, I am not quite sure if it would be the case of bisecting or, at least, what would be a good starting point. I can, though, try to boot with many other kernels to see if I can (provided that udev doesn't stop me). Note that you should boot with radeon.no_wb=1 as well for OK. I can try no_wb=1 with agpmode=-1 and report back in a few moments, to see if the lockups are still there or not. this, as CP writeback was only fixed during the 2.6.39 cycle (in commit dc66b325f161bb651493c7d96ad44876b629cf6a). Right. Thanks for that fix of yours (just read the commit). When the kernel radeon driver fails to initialize acceleration, there's no point in trying any functionality that needs acceleration, such as XVideo. (In reply to comment #12) BTW, I hope that you don't mind me providing copious amounts of testing here (and their results) in the hope to get this fixed... :-) Well, I'm afraid less quantity but more quality would be better... I thought there was some kind of multimedia adapter for the external output. Anyway, it should be possible to override the incorrect output detection, either on the kernel command line with something like video=S-video-1:d or later in xorg.conf or during X runtime with something like xrandr. But really, we need to focus on one problem per bug report as much as possible, or things are getting out of hand. (In reply to comment #9) So, I am not quite sure if it would be the case of bisecting or, at least, what would be a good starting point. No, there's no point in bisecting, as that problem should be gone with 2.6.39 final. Note that you should boot with radeon.no_wb=1 as well for OK. I can try no_wb=1 with agpmode=-1 and report back in a few moments, to see if the lockups are still there or not. no_wb=1 would only have been important for bisecting, to avoid the writeback endianness bug interfering. P.S. beware of Debian package udev version 169-1: IME an initrd generated with that installed prevents the radeon module from being loaded automatically, and when trying to load it manually, it fails to load the CP microcode and consequently fails to initialize acceleration. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are watching the assignee of the bug. -- What Every C/C++ and Fortran developer Should Know! I have been avoiding compiling a kernel nowadays, since they take ages on this notebook, but I can set up a cross-compilation environment, if necessary. BTW, would you mind sharing your .config? https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34772 --- Comment #1 from Rogério Brito rbr...@ime.usp.br 2011-05-19 20:34:40 --- Just for the record, I can provide further messages of these: this is as reproducible as I like. In fact, I am now able to reproduce it with kernel 2.6.38 if I boot the iBook G4 with the options: video=radeonfb:off radeon.agpmode=-1 radeon.modeset=1 and play a video with mplayer. If, OTOH, I leave off the KMS, then I don't get the GPU lockups that I reported. Anyway, things are *way* better with 2.6.38 than with 2.6.39, as with 2.6.39 the kernel doesn't even get the colors correctly---everything that should be red becomes blue and so forth (any kind of endianness problem?). I am attaching here another stacktrace, in case it helps. https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35472 --- Comment #5 from Sergey Kondakov virtuous...@gmail.com 2011-05-20 05:01:00 --- you mean like taking kernel's git and bisecting entire commit range between 2.6.37 and 2.6.38 (or, more likely, 2.6.37.4 and 2.6.38-rc4 which i think i've tested) while rebooting every time ? i'm not sure if i up for it but if i am then it may take quite a while. meanwhile i will also try to get a photograph of the screen. but also not today, probably. any easily gathered info, however, i can drop anytime. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are watching the assignee of the bug. -- What Every C/C++ and Fortran developer Should Know! I can see that Greg's 737a3bb9416ce2a7c7a4170852473a4fcc9 would cause radeon_cp_init() to crash when it is called via ioctl. It calls platform_device_register_resndata(), but platform_device_register_resndata() got unloaded from kernel memory. But that will only happen if CONFIG_MODULES=n, and in the config attached to the gentto report, CONFIG_MODULES=y. So platform_device_register_resndata() won't have been unloaded! Still, we should revert 737a3bb9416ce2a7c7a4170852473a4fcc9, as its assumptions are wrong in this case. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are watching the assignee of the bug. -- What Every C/C++ and Fortran developer Should Know! And that's because of the commit 737a3b. Previous configuration had CONFIG_MODULES=y, but with 2.6.36 kernels, and the bug/dmesg output was different I think. I am a bit puzzled, since for one KDE 4 session a value of 2 MiB has turned out to be enough for about 5-10 attempts - it didn't fail once. Maybe here there is simply not enough memory available no matter what I reserve for driver allocation? If so, then so be it. That might be just a limit for a 2 GB RAM machine. Is there a way to tell for sure whether reserved size is too low or there are general memory constraints? TuxOnIce logged how much of the reserved extra pages it used. https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34102 --- Comment #11 from Martin Steigerwald mar...@lichtvoll.de 2011-05-09 15:59:09 --- Ok, now it did it! First with 256 MiB reserved_size then also with 128 MiB reserved_size. Two KDE 4 sessions with compositing enabled. It had some problems to freeze tasks initially, cause an rdiff-backup and two KDE 4 desktop search indexers were running, but after some tries it did it. And if the rdiff-backup and those desktop searches fill the laptop harddisk with I/O requests up to its limit, thats just what to be expected. I am now testing 128 MiB and looks whether it works reliably. Still I wonder why 2 MiB was enough for one KDE 4 session, but two need something around 128 MiB. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are watching the assignee of the bug. -- WhatsUp Gold - Download Free Network Management Software The most intuitive, comprehensive, and cost-effective network management toolset available today. Do you need a patch for that? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are watching the assignee of the bug. -- WhatsUp Gold - Download Free Network Management Software The most intuitive, comprehensive, and cost-effective network management toolset available today. [Bug 34102] radeon drm/kms: please use suspend/hibernate notifiers for allocating memory in suspend routines

[Bug 34102] radeon drm/kms: please use suspend/hibernate notifiers for allocating memory in suspend routines
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34102 --- Comment #7 from Rafael J. Wysocki r...@sisk.pl 2011-05-04 20:05:11 --- It has been merged into the mainline, but not necessarily into -stable. Wysocki r...@sisk.pl changed: What|Removed |Added CC||r...@sisk.pl Kernel Version||2.6.38 Blocks||7216 Regression|Yes |No --- Comment #1 from Rafael J. Wysocki r...@sisk.pl 2011-05-03 20:45:22 --- Strictly speaking, this is not a regression, because the radeon driver with KMS has never worked correctly for you in this respect, right? Now, while the ultimate fix would be to rework device drivers so that they don't allocate memory from their -suspend() callbacks, it's not quite realistic to expect that that's going to happen any time soon. For this reason, I'll try to provide a workaround for you.
