[Bug 36072] New: celestia causes kernel oops when allocation a lot of memory (for textures)

2011-05-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36072

Summary: celestia causes kernel oops when allocation a lot of
memory (for textures)
   Product: Drivers
   Version: 2.5
Kernel Version: 2.6.38
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: high
  Priority: P1
 Component: Video(DRI - non Intel)
AssignedTo: drivers_video-...@kernel-bugs.osdl.org
ReportedBy: aceli...@atlas.sk
Regression: Yes

The celestia program often allocates a lot of memory (like 1.5GB on my 2GB
machine with 3GB swap) for its textures. I don't know where it stores them
(probably not Video memory), but it seems in system RAM, because swap is used
much. Sometimes when this happens the kernel crashes. After that I can only
sync and reboot the machine with alt-sysrq commands. I have only noticed this
with kernel 2.6.38.x, not before. I was using the OSS ati driver 6.14.1, with
mesa 7.10.2. All including the kernel seft compiled (for AMD fam10h CPU). I do
not understand the first line of the log. Where can I increase the vmalloc
size. Is the on the kernel command line? But it should not crash the kernel in
any case, just the program.

Here is the kernel log:
May 19 21:26:52 coolbox kernel: vmap allocation for size 178982912 failed: use

[Bug 30922] [radeon] Noisy fan with Radeon R600 and Toshiba Satellite L500-164

2011-05-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30922

--- Comment #4 from Denis Washington den...@online.de 2011-05-27 09:30:10 ---
I have talked to Dave Airlie on IRC (#radeon at freenode) today and it seems
that my assumption that thermal sensor access is needed for proper fan control
is wrong. Rather, the GPU seems to do fan control automatically and can only be
influenced by the driver by giving a new policy table to the graphics card's
BIOS.

The radeon driver doesn't currently do this, however, and relies on the BIOS'
defaults, which however seem to be bad on my machine. This is why my fan mostly
runs in full speed.

Dave says he thinks that there's some of the code lying around inside AMD to do
proper fan control setup, but still in need of a lot of review. If this is the
case, I would be happy to test the code once it's published in git.

(Please correct me if I am wrong about anything I've written here.)

Laptops don't generally use the onboard GPU fan controller and thermal sensor
since they usually have a single fan for both the GPU and the CPU. The fan and
thermal zones are generally exposed via ACPI or a vendor specific control. For
more info on the power management options in the driver see the page I linked
in comment #1.

Would it be possible that the radeon_encoder-encoder_id information is wrong?

Would it be possible that the radeon_encoder-encoder_id information is wrong?
And that there is no DP bridge ?

No it's correct. You can see the DPCD for the bridge printed and the link
seems to train ok.

Same problem with vanilla 2.6.39 on debian testing.

At the STR process the backlight goes off shortly but remains lit during
suspend. The screen goes black and stays black when out of suspend. Some
flickering on/off when entering and leaving STR. There's short harddrive
activity when coming out of suspend [1]. Also, suspend- and power-led blink/lit
as they are supposed to. The box is then locked up, not reacting to keyboard
input or even sysrq. Hard power off required.

[1] not sure about this one

There's a switch in /etc/default/acpi-support:
#RADEON_LIGHT=true

Commented or uncommented doesn't change the behavior during STR.

Anyway, things are *way* better with 2.6.38 than with 2.6.39, as with 2.6.39
the kernel doesn't even get the colors correctly---everything that should be
red becomes blue and so forth (any kind of endianness problem?).

That's probably nothing to do with the kernel directly but endianness bugs in
the X driver when acceleration is not available.

OK, then that's a separate issue. Good to know.

It would be interesting if you could bisect what broke acceleration with
 radeon.agpmode=-1.

Oooh, I guess that I made some mess in your head here, taking into
account the other messages of us. To clear things up: When I use
2.6.38, it works mostly OK if I use radeon.agpmode=-1. It is
sufficiently stable to the point that I told you that this setting was
OK. But, in fact, if I play a video with mplayer, then it always (so
far, 100% reproducible) causes those GPU lockups, but the computer is
still accessible via the network, so that I can take the logs etc. If,
instead, I use 1 instead of -1, then, even with kernel 2.6.38, I get
those lysergide-like :-) pictures that I put on my homepage (but, for
documentation purposes, I am thinking of uploading here as
attachments, as I am quite short of space there).

With kernel 2.6.39, I have not been able to get anything working,
whether or not I pass any option to the kernel.

Summary:

* 2.6.38 with KMS and agpmode=-1: OK, up to me trying to play some
video, then GPU lockups.
* 2.6.38 with KMS and agpmode=1: GPU lockups a few seconds after X
loads (it *does* show up, but locks up a few seconds latter).
* 2.6.39 with KMS and agpmode=-1: Not OK, even if I don't use anything
accelerated (problems with colors and software rendering).

So, I am not quite sure if it would be the case of bisecting or, at
least, what would be a good starting point. I can, though, try to boot
with many other kernels to see if I can (provided that udev doesn't
stop me).

Note that you should boot with radeon.no_wb=1 as well for

OK. I can try no_wb=1 with agpmode=-1 and report back in a few
moments, to see if the lockups are still there or not.

this, as CP writeback was only fixed during the 2.6.39 cycle (in commit
 dc66b325f161bb651493c7d96ad44876b629cf6a).

Right. Thanks for that fix of yours (just read the commit).

OK, probably only the first one matters. Then, it stays there and
doesn't load the system... Actually, as I am writing this thing, after

With 2.6.39-rc7 + KMS + agpmode=-1 + no_wb=1 + dynclks=1:

* I don't get the Oopsen.

I think the XV extension not working is something that has always happened with

 With 2.6.39-rc7 + KMS + agpmode=-1 + no_wb=1 + dynclks=1:

 * XV is not available to mplayer or other applications.

When the kernel radeon driver fails to initialize acceleration, there's no
point in trying any functionality that needs acceleration, such as XVideo.

I don't think there's any point doing any more tests with 2.6.39-rc7, as it's
obviously suffering from additional issues which only occurred intermittently
during the 2.6.39 cycle.

(In reply to comment #12)
BTW, I hope that you don't mind me providing copious amounts of
testing here (and their results) in the hope to get this fixed... :-)

Well, I'm afraid less quantity but more quality would be better... It's
becoming rather difficult and time-consuming to find the relevant pieces of
information in this mass.

(In reply to comment #11)
 Just for the record #2, 2.6.38 with KMS + agpmode=-1 + no_wb=1 +
dynclks=1 still locks up the GPU when I play a video with mplayer.

Has either of you tried agpmode=1 dynclks=1? Does that increase stability at
all?

Besides that, like Andreas, with dynclks=1 the resolution is reduced
to be 800x600. I didn't have the opportunity to read the X logs
regarding the S-Video port, but, at least for the user, iBooks
(differently from PowerBooks) don't have user-accessible S-Video ports
(but this doesn't prevent Apple from having inutilized them somehow).

I thought there was some kind of multimedia adapter for the external output.

Anyway, it should be possible to override the incorrect output detection,
either on the kernel command line with something like video=S-video-1:d or
later in xorg.conf or during X runtime with something like xrandr.

But really, we need to focus on one problem per bug report as much as possible,
or things are getting out of hand.

(In reply to comment #9)
So, I am not quite sure if it would be the case of bisecting or, at
least, what would be a good starting point.

No, there's no point in bisecting, as that problem should be gone with 2.6.39
final.

Note that you should boot with radeon.no_wb=1 as well for

OK. I can try no_wb=1 with agpmode=-1 and report back in a few
moments, to see if the lockups are still there or not.

no_wb=1 would only have been important for bisecting, to avoid the writeback
endianness bug interfering.

P.S. beware of Debian package udev version 169-1: IME an initrd generated with
that installed prevents the radeon module from being loaded automatically, and
when trying to load it manually, it fails to load the CP microcode and
consequently fails to initialize acceleration.

Hi, Michel.

Thank you very much for the attention.

(In reply to comment #16)
When the kernel radeon driver fails to initialize acceleration, there's no
point in trying any functionality that needs acceleration, such as XVideo.

OK.

I don't think there's any point doing any more tests with 2.6.39-rc7, as it's
obviously suffering from additional issues which only occurred intermittently
 during the 2.6.39 cycle.

Right.

Well, I'm afraid less quantity but more quality would be better... It's
becoming rather difficult and time-consuming to find the relevant pieces of
 information in this mass.

Indeed, it is getting out of hand pretty quickly. Do you want me to give you
some SSH access to this notebook? Or, if that's not feasible/useful, what would
you like me to test as the next step, so that I avoid flooding you with so much
data?

Has either of you tried agpmode=1 dynclks=1? Does that increase stability at
 all?

I will try those. But with which kernel? I have been avoiding compiling a
kernel nowadays, since they take ages on this notebook, but I can set up a
cross-compilation environment, if necessary.

BTW, would you mind sharing your .config?

I thought there was some kind of multimedia adapter for the external output.

The only external adapter is one to a VGA port. No traces of S-video here.

But really, we need to focus on one problem per bug report as much as
 possible,
or things are getting out of hand.

OK, I can file a separate bug for this S-Video issue, then.

Thank you so much for your patience,

Rogério Brito.

Allow forcing on all GPU clocks

(In reply to comment #17)
Has either of you tried agpmode=1 dynclks=1? Does that increase stability at
  all?

I will try those. But with which kernel?

2.6.38 should be fine for this test. But at some point it'll probably be useful
for you to be able to try kernel patches. Once you've built a kernel, building
the radeon module with a patch shouldn't take long.

E.g., you guys could try this patch, and booting with radeon.dynclks=0, which
should force on all GPU clocks. Does that increase stability with agpmode=1 or
agpmode=-1?

BTW, would you mind sharing your .config?

My .config still takes 1-2 hours to build on this 1.6 GHz PowerBook. If that
could help you, please ask for it on the debian-powerpc list.

(In reply to comment #1)
Anyway, things are *way* better with 2.6.38 than with 2.6.39, as with 2.6.39
the kernel doesn't even get the colors correctly---everything that should be
red becomes blue and so forth (any kind of endianness problem?).

That's probably nothing to do with the kernel directly but endianness bugs in
the X driver when acceleration is not available.

It would be interesting if you could bisect what broke acceleration with
radeon.agpmode=-1. Note that you should boot with radeon.no_wb=1 as well for
this, as CP writeback was only fixed during the 2.6.39 cycle (in commit
dc66b325f161bb651493c7d96ad44876b629cf6a).

I was able to reproduce the acceleration initialization failure with the Debian
2.6.39-rc7-powerpc kernel, but not with a self-built 2.6.39 kernel. So this was
probably just an intermittent problem during the 2.6.39 cycle, e.g. due to the
intermittent broken usage of the DMA API by TTM.

As for the GPU lockups, does radeon.dynclks=1 help for those?

radeon.dynclks=1 causes the wrong resolution to be selected. It thinks
something is conncted to the S-video port with a max resolution of 800x600, so
it selects this instead of the native resolution (1024x768).

--- Comment #1 from Rogério Brito rbr...@ime.usp.br 2011-05-19 20:34:40 ---
Just for the record, I can provide further messages of these: this is as
reproducible as I like.

In fact, I am now able to reproduce it with kernel 2.6.38 if I boot the iBook
G4 with the options:

video=radeonfb:off radeon.agpmode=-1 radeon.modeset=1

and play a video with mplayer.

If, OTOH, I leave off the KMS, then I don't get the GPU lockups that I
reported.

Anyway, things are *way* better with 2.6.38 than with 2.6.39, as with 2.6.39
the kernel doesn't even get the colors correctly---everything that should be
red becomes blue and so forth (any kind of endianness problem?).

I am attaching here another stacktrace, in case it helps.

Regards,

Rogério Brito.

[Bug 35472] New: [r600] radeondrmfb rendering is broken and running X makes GPU lock-up on RV770 CE (Radeon HD 4730)

2011-05-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35472

Summary: [r600] radeondrmfb rendering is broken and running X
makes GPU lock-up on RV770 CE (Radeon HD 4730)
   Product: Drivers
   Version: 2.5
Kernel Version: 2.6.38
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
 Component: Video(DRI - non Intel)
AssignedTo: drivers_video-...@kernel-bugs.osdl.org
ReportedBy: virtuous...@gmail.com
Regression: Yes

with 2.6.37 it's all OK but since 2.6.38 from very framebuffer initialization
screen is filled with dense grey lines looking like ugly grid. also per every
3cm on my 1920x1080/23' screen there is a distinctive whitish vertical line.
when X try to startup i can see cursor and can move it around for a while (that
grey grid is there too) but kdm does not starting up and GPU locks up.

it is the same with 2.6.39. here is `dmesg|grep drm` for 2.6.39:

you mean like taking kernel's git and bisecting entire commit range between
2.6.37 and 2.6.38 (or, more likely, 2.6.37.4 and 2.6.38-rc4 which i think i've
tested) while rebooting every time ? i'm not sure if i up for it but if i am
then it may take quite a while.

meanwhile i will also try to get a photograph of the screen. but also not
today, probably. any easily gathered info, however, i can drop anytime.

OK, this is a bit strange.

I can see that Greg's 737a3bb9416ce2a7c7a4170852473a4fcc9 would cause
radeon_cp_init() to crash when it is called via ioctl. It calls
platform_device_register_resndata(), but platform_device_register_resndata()
got unloaded from kernel memory.

But that will only happen if CONFIG_MODULES=n, and in the config attached to
the gentto report, CONFIG_MODULES=y. So platform_device_register_resndata()
won't have been unloaded!

Still, we should revert 737a3bb9416ce2a7c7a4170852473a4fcc9, as its assumptions
are wrong in this case.

Actually, radeon_cp_init() crashed only with later kernel configurations which
had CONFIG_MODULES=n. And that's because of the commit 737a3b.

Previous configuration had CONFIG_MODULES=y, but with 2.6.36 kernels, and the
bug/dmesg output was different I think. Probably it was a different,
2.6.36-related bug, which was fixed in later kernel releases.

vga_switcheroo works the same way as before 2.6.38. Thank you, Florian.

Hm.. according to the original commit description ON / OFF is used to turn
the not-in-use-card on/off...

What was the behavior before v2.6.38-rc4? I don't know if this was an intended
change in behavior or an unintended side effect of some other change. Dave
Airlie can probably tell though...

p.s.:
Anyway, I presume working around that in userspace is not the issue? (i.e.
maybe doing something like this:

IGDINUSE=`grep IGD /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch | awk -F: '{ $3 }'`
if [ x$IGDINUSE != x+ ]; then
 echo IGD /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
fi

What was the behavior before v2.6.38-rc4?

On 2.6.37.6 nothing happens if card is already active:

# cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
0:+:Pwr::01:05.0
1: :Pwr::02:00.0
# echo IGD /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
# cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
0:+:Pwr::01:05.0
1: :Pwr::02:00.0

Anyway, I presume working around that in userspace is not the issue?

You are right. I wrote simple script for this already. Thanks.

dmesg using Linus' HEAD of May 10th 2011

On a Toshiba laptop using an AMD Fusion GPU (SoC: E-240), I am unable to have
screen turn on with KMS. It stays blank, even when starting the X server.

I tried with 2.6.38.5, Today's Linus tree, Yesterday's drm-2.6/drm-next, all to
the same result.

[Bug 34252] Unexpected behaviour when switching video cards with vga_switcheroo

Either ignored, or DIS card should be turned off, not IGD. I don't know what
exactly should happen as there is seems no official docs for vga_switcheroo,
only various tutorials and wikis. For example ubuntu tutorial
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics) says:

echo IGD /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
Connects integrated graphics with outputs.

-- absolutely nothing is said if some card should be turned on / off.

I think this has become a duplicate of
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27314

and Jeff, cheers up, i'm writing this from an iMac 27 (model 12,2), only i have
to boot my linux partition from cd to enable bios instead of efi, then kms
works.

I now had a hang a preallocation (unfortunately before I came around to compile
with your patch from bug 30492). I raised reserved size to 4 MiB for now. Lets
see how that goes. If it works, then I might go back to 2 MiB or even less in
order to trigger bug 30492 with the patch from there compiled in.

This wasn't a hang I think, see there.

I tried to hibernate two running KDE 4 sessions with reserved_size upto 64 MiB:

shambhala:/sys/power cat reserved_size
67108864

Which failed with:

May 9 16:41:47 localhost kernel: PM: freeze of devices complete after 524.427
msecs
May 9 16:41:47 localhost kernel: PM: late freeze of devices complete after

May 9 16:41:47 localhost kernel: PM: early recover of devices complete after
0.366 msecs

Does it make sense to go to even higher values? I am a bit puzzled, since for
one KDE 4 session a value of 2 MiB has turned out to be enough for about 5-10
attempts - it didn't fail once.

Maybe here there is simply not enough memory available no matter what I reserve
for driver allocation? If so, then so be it. That might be just a limit for a 2
GB RAM machine.

Is there a way to tell for sure whether reserved size is too low or there are
general memory constraints? TuxOnIce logged how much of the reserved extra
pages it used. Can in-kernel-hibernation do this too?

Ok, now it did it! First with 256 MiB reserved_size then also with 128 MiB
reserved_size. Two KDE 4 sessions with compositing enabled. It had some
problems to freeze tasks initially, cause an rdiff-backup and two KDE 4 desktop
search indexers were running, but after some tries it did it. And if the
rdiff-backup and those desktop searches fill the laptop harddisk with I/O
requests up to its limit, thats just what to be expected. I am now testing 128
MiB and looks whether it works reliably. Still I wonder why 2 MiB was enough
for one KDE 4 session, but two need something around 128 MiB.

It looks like the amount of memory the graphics driver allocates during
hibernation depends on how the GPU is loaded (the more 3D stuff you do before
hibernation, the more memory it needs to allocate).

So, I'd say reserved_size should match not only your hardware configuration,
but also your workload.

I'll try to post the patch from comment #3 for review, let's see if people
will like it. :-)

Do you have a guess, why this is happening (for example, any error messages
from the kernel) ? Can you login via ssh when the system freezes with a black
screen? Do you think the system completely froze, or are, for example, the
sysrq-keys still working? Is there anything in the dmesg that gives a clue? If
there is nothing in the logs, can you try netconsole?

[Bug 34772] New: [radeon] [R300] GPU lockups with when KMS is enabled

Summary: [radeon] [R300] GPU lockups with when KMS is enabled

   Version: 2.5
Kernel Version: 2.6.38
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
 Component: Video(DRI - non Intel)
AssignedTo: drivers_video-...@kernel-bugs.osdl.org

Regression: No

Created an attachment (id=57062)

dmesg output right after the lock up, obtained via the network

Hi there.

I have been getting some Oopses/stack traces when I try to use my iBook G4
(with an ATI Technologies Inc M11 NV/FireGL Mobility T2e card) and I enable
KMS.

The userland here is Debian unstable with the DRM from experimental, but I am
willing to test anything that you would like me to.

For example, attached is the last of a series of such Oopses that I got when I
tried to test if a video was playing or not with mplayer.

I tried to use 2.6.39-rc{5,6}, but upon boot I get messages telling me that
there were failures and that hardware acceleration will be disabled and I that
I get is a desktop with colors distorted like if there were some endianness
issues.

This is, BTW, part of my attempts to get Linux running well on PowerPC, with
some of my logs (with photos) present at my homepage:

http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito/linux/debug-r300/

Please, if there is anything that I can provide to fix this, let me know and I
will do my best.

Thanks, Rogério Brito.

Those 2 MB seem to do just fine with one KDE 4.6 session and lots of open
stuff. Next week I hold a Linux training where I have a private and a job KDE
session open and once. I will try whether the hibernation code takes that ;).
If it doesn't - this sometimes didn't work with TuxOnIce either - even before
Radeon KMS. Somewhere there might just be a limit?

Sounds quite like extra pages allowance in TuxOnIce.

Okay, on 2.6.38.5-tp42-snapshot-resv-size-dirty with just your patch from this
bug report I am starting with:

shambhala:/sys/power ls
disk image_size pm_async pm_test reserved_size resume state wakeup_count
shambhala:/sys/power cat reserved_size
1048576
shambhala:/sys/power echo 2097152 reserved_size
shambhala:/sys/power cat reserved_size
2097152

With that I suspended Amarok, KMail, Kontact, Akregaror on 4 activities with
different backgrounds and whatnot just fine.

I bet I should remove any manual tweaking of image_size then, should I? I
currently have:

echo 71000 /sys/power/image_size

Hmmm, I will remove it and reboot to get back the auto estimation.

Thanks.

The image size setting shouldn't matter and in fact I'd like to restore the

one.

Do you need a patch for that?

Hmmm, I think I now have 2/5 of RAM as image_size autotune value with 2.6.38.5:

shambhala:/sys/power free

Strictly speaking, this is not a regression, because the radeon driver with
KMS has never worked correctly for you in this respect, right?

Now, while the ultimate fix would be to rework device drivers so that they
don't allocate memory from their -suspend() callbacks, it's not quite
realistic to expect that that's going to happen any time soon.

For this reason, I'll try to provide a workaround for you.
