I have a problem with importing items. I think I have already RTFMed on
the web site :).
I can export an item without trouble. If I then try to re-import it,
either unchanged or by changing some values, I only get two lines of output

looks ok at first glance, just where are you running the command from?
As it is below you must run it from the directory where the source
directory resides.

Are you sure you are using the right -s option?
-s [input-dir] should point to the directory which contains one
directory per item to be imported.

Are you using the import script or calling ItemImport directly? While
they're probably identical, import may do a couple of additional things
that solve your problem.
Also are you getting any errors or issues in any of your logs; try
checking postgresql and tomcat logs for any issues or errors

Hoping others can test this error and assist, its stopping us putting
1.5.1 XML into production.
We have bitstreams that are restricted to administrator or collection
admins, if a user who does not have authorisation to that bitstream logs
into the restricted item they continue
