Re: [Dspace-tech] Update dspace from 1.5.x to 1.6.x

Hi Rev,

can you indicate with which of the steps (as described on
http://www.dspace.org/1_6_2Documentation/ch04.html ) you are running into
problems ?
What also might be important: are you doing these procedures on a windows or
linux box, and are you using postgres or OracleDB ?

best of success with your upgrade,

Re: [Dspace-tech] Fw: Separate sets of Search fields for different collections

2010-09-20 Thread Bram Luyten
Hi Renata,

if I'm not mistaking, it's not possible to influence the search behaviour
for specific collections/communities with out of the box configuration. So
this functionality will require some degree of customization.
Are you doing this in XMLUI or JSPUI ?

One way to tackle this problem (for example in JSPUI) would be to make your
own custom version of advanced search, offering search in those specific
metadata fields you want. But this is not exactly the same than really
altering the metadata fields that get used for simple searching.

best regards,

Bram Luyten

 Hi Renata

This might be a better question for the dspace-tech list.
You may be able to limit the search fields to a specific collection,
however how to do this without effecting other search facilities I am
not exactly sure. The search facility is an API so I would assume you
would ultimately have to write something yourself to do this. I've not
tried this here at Sydney, but would be interested in knowing if
 anyone else has done this.

 Cheers

I'm running DSpace 1.5.2 and wondering if it is possible to control
the browse layout column content by collection.

For example, all of our collections currently use the standard
 webui.itemlist.columns settings in dspace.cfg:

 webui.itemlist.columns = thumbnail, dc.date.issued(date), dc.title,
 dc.contributor.*

I would like for a particular collection to not show all contributors
in the final column, just those that are dc.contributor.artist. So,
 I've added this to dspace.cfg:

 webui.itemlist.rhodesart.collections = 10267/6365

 webui.itemlist.rhodesart.columns = thumbnail, dc.date.issued(date),
 dc.title, dc.contributor.artist

However, it isn't working, and that collection is using the standard
 itemlist columns.

Is this method supported for controlling column content per
 collection?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi César,

can you indicate how large large is in your context? are you talking
several MB's, hundreds of MB's or Gigabytes ?
Secondly, what kind of support would you require ? Archiving offering
downloading, or are you looking at implementing a streaming solution ?

In general, I wouldn't recommend using the standard submission workflow for
files over 50MB, unless the server is located in your local LAN. Once
ingested in your DSpace, it can be used without a problem to offer download
for large files, or to setup a streaming solution, either with an open
source solution or a commercial solution like
ourshttp://atmire.com/audiovisual.php
.

There are quite a few memory leaks in DSpace. We have a cronjob to restart

Re: [Dspace-tech] Help with non-running DSpace scripts

2010-09-20 Thread Stan Orlov
Hi Stuart,

In 1.5.1, we used to launch the handle server using:

dsrun -Ddspace.log.init.disable=true
-Dlog4j.configuration=log4j-handle-plugin.properties net.handle.server.Main
C:\DSpace\handle-server

I used your suggestion and set up the DSpace Handle Server as a Windows
server. Now, when I start this service in Windows Services, it shows as
running and I can restart it there w/o any problems, but when I click on a
handle link in DSpace records, I have Error - Cannot Connect to Server.

On the other hand, even when the DSpace Handle Server service is not started
in the Services window, I can just run:

dspace-handle.bat

in the command prompt and the handle server starts just fine, asks me for
the passphrase and then I can resolve handles w/o any problem until I Ctrl+C
out of the command prompt.

So, it looks like the Windows service I set up is not launching the server,
or at least not what dspace-handle.bat is launching. I think I should
change some settings somewhere, but I am not sure which ones. Any advice is
most welcome!

Cheers,
Stan

 Hi Stan,

I've update 1.5.1 to 1.6.2 on a Windows 2003 server and it is running.
However, when I try to start the handle server, I got an error. It depends
on what I use - dspace or dsrun:

  C:\DSpace\bindspace start-handle-server
  Using DSpace installation in: C:\DSpace
  Command not found: start-handle-server

  C:\DSpace\bindsrun start-handle-server
  Using DSpace installation in: C:\DSpace
Error in launcher.xml: Invalid class name: start-handle-server

How did you do this in 1.5.1? I think that most people using Windows tend
 to use this approach:

  -
 https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/Handle+Server+Setup+as+Windows+Service+%28using+Tanuki%29

This allows you to set it up as a Windows Service, so that it starts up
automatically when the machines boots up.

 Thanks,

[Dspace-tech] Google crawler repeatedly requests non-existent handles...

2010-09-20 Thread Panyarak Ngamsritragul

Hi,

There are 2 points here:
1. In our repository, we have configured to allow crawler to browser our
site by putting a robot.txt with only one line :
User-agent: *
I have checked with webmaster tools and it reports that the crawler access
was success. Anyway, I am not quite sure that should be OK. The problem
is that internal error messages are being sent to me everyday saying that
the crawler cannot access certain pages. I have checked the handles
attached and found that those are non-existent pages... Can any of you
please suggest what I should do to get rid of this kind of errors ?

2. I also submited sitemaps to Google, the latest result reported in
webmaster tools is:
   Sitemap: http://kb.psu.ac.th/psukb/sitemap
   Status: OK
   Type: Index
   Submitted: 17/7/2010
   Downloaded:17/9/2010
   URLs submitted: 4,545
   URLs in web index: 3,785

Should I stop the crawler as mentioned in 1? and what happened to the
URLs which reported as not in web index?

Thanks.

[Dspace-tech] Error in importing Solr stats

2010-09-20 Thread George Stanley Kozak
Hi...

I just migrated my production system to DSpace 1.6.2 from DSpace 1.5.2.
Everything went well, until I did the stats-log-importer for the solr
statistics.
It ran for a long time and then I received this error:

About to commit data to solr...Exception: Error opening new searcher. exceeded
limit of maxWarmingSearchers=2. Try again later.

Does anyone know what caused this error? I didn't see this when I upgraded my
test system so I am assuming it has to do with the size of my production logs.
IF so, what can I do to fix this?

Re: [Dspace-tech] Error in importing Solr stats

2010-09-20 Thread Peter Dietz
Hi George,

I'm thinking that this was SOLR having an issue.

For some background, check out this thread:
http://www.mail-archive.com/dspace-tech@lists.sourceforge.net/msg11062.html

The two imbalances currently going on are writing to solr:

   - too frequently: usage events, which end user traffic hitting your site.
   possibly 10+ commits per second
   - too infrequently: statistics importer. possibly too large at
potentially millions of records from log importing in a single commit.

solr.add(document) is a cheap operation, as is just puts something in queue
to be processed later.
solr.commit() is an expensive operation, which you want to call just
right.

Since we don't really know whats right, I suggest we let solr do whats good
enough for it, and that would be autoCommit.

You can set that up with some
defaults: /dspace/solr/statistics/conf/solrconfig.xml

maxDocs - number of updates since last commit is greater than this
maxTime - oldest uncommited update (in ms) is this long ago
autoCommit
  maxDocs1/maxDocs
  maxTime1000/maxTime
/autoCommit

If you rely on autoCommit, we can then remove some of the
handholding/lockstepping of solr.add(doc), immediately followed by
solr.commit() which is terrible for solr performance (on busy instances).

So, check out activating autoCommit, and see if things improve. I would
suggest that solr autocommit becomes the default for future releases of
DSpace, so I'll need some agreement on this.
