Can anyone give me some insight to this error message? I find it weird that
the URL ends simply on /browse. Not something like /browse?type=author. I
can't see how a user would navigate to this URL aside from directly editing it.

I've had similar issues and errors when trying to configure the handle
server. Granted I was installing on a RHEL 5 virtual server but I think
the general installation instructions remain the same.
* Make sure all necessary ports are open for the appropriate
communication

I can't seem to get the handle links to work for my instance of Dspace,
they just time out. From what I can tell, I installed and configured
the handle server correctly on my Virtual RHEL 5 server. The
handle-server.log has no errors after starting the handle server.

It looks like you are using the GNU Java JDK. If you install and use the
Sun Java JDK your problem will likely go away.
