I keep getting the following error message while trying to read a new
ID-RP2C with the software:
Communication Failed. Check connection, settings.
Invaild data was returned.
I am unable to get into the unit to do the set-up. I have checked and
re-checked IP configurations and cable hookups.
What is your internet connectivity like?

Aaron,
I listened to the .MP3
From my perspective, that just sounds like packet loss on the
internet side. How much / what work have you done on that aspect? You
mentioned changing network cards, but what about looking at the
latency on your connection, MTU in the router, etc. etc. ?
What I am hearing is R2D2 meaning to me that you have BANDWIDTH problems.
What is your TRUE bandwidth, Aaron?
Otherwise the audio sounds perfect. It is just dropping bits and can not
error correct
as too many bits are being dropped.

The audio sample clearly reveals that something is wrong. Significant
information below is that the problem occurs only with remote traffic, not
with local traffic which generally outrules local RF equipment failure.
I would look more closely the internet connection. Sounds like there is

Peter I am sorry but I have no working knowledge of a dstar repeater system. I
wish you good luck on finding the problem.

I will clear things up here.
Our Internet is fine. This problem has been with us from both
locations when we moved. We use Cable (Modem has been changed out
twice) for our Internet. We have 1.5 Up and 10 MB Down.
We have spent countless hours on the phone with our ISP to ensure we
had the

How do you know that? What tests confirm this?

What an ISP considers good and what is good for VOIP/Gateway may be two
different things. ISPs often only look at transfer speed (are you getting
an average of 80% or better of the advertised speed for up and down.) You
also need to look at such things as jitter for VOIP.
This all points to
I pay for this specific bandwidth.
Yes, tests were run inside the TWC network and outside.
[ED: In trying to help diagnose your problem, people need as much detail as
possible, such as what tests? Only bandwidth, or more detailed analysis.]

My suggestion at this point would be look at the router. Similar problems
with
the guys in Temple occurred every time they connected to another gateway
or a reflector. Finely the router bit the dust. With the bandwidth you are
talking
about this should NOT occur at all. So, look at the router or

As written this doesn't make sense.
Are you saying you have a cable provider internet
connection that has upload speed of 1.54 mpbs and
download of 10 mbps? Or you are using separate
Aaron:
While we are all learning, I disagree from the posts that you have a packet
loss problem. The W6YYY system has been having measurable packet loss
problems (from zero to 40%) in bursts - the effect of ISP packet loss on
dstar audio is not the garble you are hearing, but missed words,
Aaron,
You do appear to be using a 'user callsign - KE5KAF' for the 'repeater
callsign - KE5KAF C' (http://www.jfindu.net/dstarlh.aspx?rptr=KE5KAF) and
this is contrary to recommended practice for gateway operation. You could
run this past the trust server admins ([EMAIL PROTECTED]),
but it is
No the KE5KAF is the main callsign for the repeater. I do not use that call
when using Dstar. I am aware of the problems that would occur.
Thanks anyways...

Pete AE5PL recently noted problems with a Gateway that had the S
callsign
You lost me on the trust server thing. That should have no bearing on my
issues. Right now I am trying to get a club callsign so I can switch the
repeater to a different callsign and use my KE5KAF callsign on the system
instead. In the works...
As for all the other issues from the past
Our Internet is fine.
As others have said, you know ON THE AVERAGE it is superb, but you
don't know about VOIP/UDP performance (jitter, etc.).
What else are you running on the gateway computer that could steal
CPU cycles and/or add ethernet traffic? (Several folks have wondered
about this.)
Nate, your always full of good ideas. I really hope this is the problem. I
removed the S of the system. Lets see now if that was the problem all along.
I am not sure where I found that, I think it was in the admin group. So I did
as it had said.

I just queried dstar_global: 154 systems have S terminals defined.
If this is a problem, many others should experience this issue also.
