FCC Warns Trucking Firms about Alleged Unlicensed 10-Meter Operation

From the ARRL website:

FCC Warns Trucking Firms about Alleged Unlicensed 10-Meter Operation

NEWINGTON, CT, Jul 28, 2003--The FCC Enforcement Bureau has sent
Warning Notice letters to three highway transportation firms
asserting
that drivers of some of their vehicles may have transmitted without a
license on 10 meters. All three notices allege the unlicensed
operations took place July 8 on Interstate highways in South
Carolina.

Letters went out July 14 from FCC Special Counsel Riley Hollingsworth
to Jolly Roger Capital Ltd of Columbia, South Carolina, Tidewater
Transit Company of Kinston, North Carolina, and Shuford Lumber of
Marion, North Carolina. He warned all three firms that operation of
radio transmitting equipment without a license could lead to fines of
up to $10,000, equipment seizure and even imprisonment.

Hollingsworth cited information before the Commission that spelled
out each vehicle's highway location, license plate and--in two
instances--operating frequency (28.085 MHz). One of the Warning
Notice
letters also identified the make and year of the vehicle. The alleged
offenses were said to have occurred when the vehicles were under way
on Interstate 77 or Interstate 20 in South Carolina. Hollingsworth
asked all three firms to get in touch with him to discuss the
allegations.

[DX-CHAT] frustration!

2004-01-19 Thread Tom Johnson
I have always heard that MFSK16 utilized the default sideband for the band
used, such as USB in 20 and LSB on 40, etc. Last night, I was told that
MFSK, Hellschreiber and SSTV are always used on USB. Well, tonight on 40, I
found one MFSK QSO on upper and another on lower sideband.

Which sideband should I look for when using MFSK, Hellschreiber and SSTV on
40 and below?

I have had a lot of trouble tuning in Hellschreiber and MFSK and hate to
think it was because I am on the wrong sideband..

Thanks in advance

Tom

MEANWHILE, VU4NRO TURNED UP ON 14205 AND WORKED A HALF DOZEN OR SO,
INCLUDING I MIGHT ADD THIS WRITER AND ALL ROUND GOOD GUY (2 TO GO NOW).
THEN, HE MADE LIKE A TREE AND LEAFT..

I WONDER HOW MANY OF THOSE THAT GOT VU2WAP THOUGHT THEY GOT THE

[DX-CHAT] Gus Browning's logs

2005-01-10 Thread Tom Johnson
The mystery of what became of Gus Browning's logs has been solved. Gus lived
fairly close by and I managed to locate his daughter several months ago, and
she looked into the matter. I just got of the phone with her. After Gus died
in 1991, his wife sold the house, but gave everybody a chance to get
whatever they wanted. She remembers the logbooks in several boxes by the
door, even thumbed through several of them. Apparently nobody picked them up
though and the new owners trashed them. An all too common answer to this
question.

[DX-CHAT] DXCC application

2006-10-18 Thread Tom Johnson
I received my cards back from ARRL today. Included was an unsigned note
complaining that I had not separated the cards by mode and that further such
applications would not be processed. I have been sending cards to the league
for over 30 years now, always separated by bands and alphabetized by prefix.
This is the first time anyone has told me I was doing it wrong. The note was
short, snappy and unsigned and I am a bit upset by it. What's worse, I sent
in a second application a few weeks ago and if they bounce the whole thing,
I am gonna be real upset. From a public relations standpoint, I feel that
DXCC has shot me the proverbial bird and right now, I am sorry that I am a
life member of ARRL. What's going on in Newington?

[DX-CHAT] DXCC applicatioin revisited

2006-10-18 Thread Tom Johnson
I did in fact e mail Bill at the league. My point was that this situation
could have been handled differently. A simple request do do it differently
would have sufficed instead of anonymously telling me to do it their way or
stuff it I have had several runins recently with the league over several
different matters, and they act like they don't care anymore about image or
anything else. I have all but two now and mebbe I won't have to bother them
too much more about anything.

[DX-CHAT] thanks for the replies

2006-10-18 Thread Tom Johnson
Most have been constructive, but several have totally misunderstood the
meaning of my gripe. I have not said the league was wrong nor have I asked
for or expected an apology. My complaint was and is the rather cavalier and
anonymous treatment that I, as a league member, got from MY ARRL. I admit
that I made a mistake. That is a given. The last problem was when the league
messed up on my credit card and sent me a letter that would have made a
collection agency proud. I wrote them back and told them to ty again, which
they did, and it went through. There was never a reply or acknowledgement
that time. At a time when the league is under fire from a lot of folk about
their policies, they need all the positive PR they can get, and it looks
like they simply don't care anymore. Subject closed

[DX-CHAT] MMTTY Problem

2007-09-17 Thread Tom Johnson
I have used MMTTY for the past few years with good results. Recently, I had
the motherboard on this computer to die and it was replaced. Nothing else
was touched.

Today, I tried RTTY for the first time since having the work done. It
transmits fine, prints OK, and shows a reading on the scope as always.
However, on receive, there is nothing on the scope and no print. I turned
off the line in mute and can hear the RTTY audio in the PC speaker, so it is
coming in, but not making it to the MTTY program for some reason. I have
tried swapping the plugs on the audio card with no results. Does anybody
have any ideas?

Thanks for all the info. WOW, it looks like I touched a nerve... It seems
like there is one of those in every organization. I am glad that I am not
the only one who felt unwelcome. Thanks also for the explanation of the .
prohibition of phonetics That doesn't bode well for my problem. These ears
are not as sharp as they were when I was first licensed nearly 50 years ago
and D sounds like B, S sounds like F, and T sounds like P. So, you can see
why I need phonetics. I recently got addicted to county hunting, so will try
to ignore the staff. Everyone take care and thanks again.
