3W/XV, VIETNAM. Mike, OM2DX (aka E4/OM2DX, YI9X..etc), is now in Hanoi,
and is working for the Embassy of the Slovak Republic. He has obtained
a license with the callsigns XV9DX and 3W1M. He is expected to be here
the next 3 years and be active on all bands using CW, SSB and the Digi
modes. QRNs shown that Mike has been on 40/20/17/15 meters CW this past

5X, UGANDA. Peter, DL8SBQ, is now active as 5X4X from Arua until June.
Activity will be on 40/20/17/15/12/10 meters SSB. Over the past week
Peter was on 20/17/15 meters. He uses only 100 watts into a Spiderbeam
for 20-10 meters and a Zepp antenna for 40 meters. PLEASE NOTE: Peter
cannot operate after 2000z because the power is off in Arua. So, if
you hear a station on after that time, it is a pirate. QSL via DF5GQ.
7X, ALGERIA. Fred, ON6QR, will be active as 7X2ARA, the club callsign
of "Amamteur Radio Algerians", for only a few hours this week. He will
be on the air starting at 2000z on January 17th, until early morning on
the 18th. His aim is to make QSOs during the Hungarian DX Contest and
will be pleased to put you in the log. His activity will be on both CW
and SSB; bands will be used according to propagation. QSL via 7X2ARA.
A3, TONGA (EME DXpedition Report). Paul, A35RK, informs that he has been
talking to Bob, ZL1RS (now signing as A35RS), on the phone because he
was a little concerned about him due to some nasty weather and wind storms
coming out of the NW. Bob is situated on the NW end of the island. Paul
states, "Bob said that he has had some trouble keeping his antenna pointed,
because of the wind, but he's fine and all his equipment is working OK.
Bob said that he has made about 60 2m EME contacts so far."

FO, FRENCH POLYNESIA (Update). Phil, F5PHW, informs OPDX that his 2 year
assignment in Tahiti will begin during the summer in August and end in
July of 2011. He will be there with his family, and since he is there for
work, his on air activities will be limited, but he will try to operate
as much as possible. At the moment he doesn't know where he will be
living (house or apartment). If he lives in a house, Phil intends to be
active on all HF bands from 80-10 meters mainly on CW and RTTY (possibly
some PSK31) with very little SSB using only 100 watts. His antennas from
the house QTH will be:
80-40m - Inverted V + HF6VX (GP)
30m - HF6VX
20-10m - HF6VX + Spiderbeam (not sure)
However, if he lives in an apartment the antenna may only be the HF6VX.
QSL via F8BPN, by the Bureau or direct. QSL will also by LoTW. Phil tells
OPDX that if he has time, he will create a Web page with photos and an
online log search. More information is forthcoming, especially about his
callsign. ADDED NOTES: Phil has been active as J28BS (1993-1994-1999),
6W1/F5PHW (1994-1997), FM/F5PHW (1994-1995) and F5PHW/P EU032. All these

HEADING TO THE CARIBBEAN (Maritime Mobile). John, ZS1JNT, left Cape Town,
South Africa (in mid-December), in the new catamaran called "Oceans
Dream 2" heading towards the Carribean. The 40 ft. catamaran is headed to
Chaguaramas, Trinidad & Tobago. John will be operating Maritime Mobile
under the callsign ZS1JNT/MM. He recently left James Bay, St. Helena, on
January 7th. Look for him to be active on 20 meters after 1800z, possibly
on 14297.5 kHz (or between 14235-14250 kHz). Read his interesting blog at:

H7/YN7, NICARAGUA (Date Correction). Operators Stan/AC8W, Hank/K8DD,
Jim/KB8TXZ and Lee/N8LJ will be active for one week starting February 17th.
Their activity will include the ARRL DX CW Contest (February 21-22nd).
Emphasis will be on 160/80 meters and 30/17/12 meters. Their callsigns
(TBA later) will be either be H7/homecall or YN2 callsigns. QSL via info

IOTA NEWS...............................
EU-038. During the annual Dutch PACC Contest, members of the PA3FKN
PACC Team will activate the Island of Ameland, one of the
West Frisian Islands off the north coast of the Netherlands.
It consists mostly of sand dunes. "This is a good opportunity
for island chasers to contact EU-038 on all bands, propagation
permitting", according to Gerben, PG5M. The PA3FKN PACC Team
members are: Bote/PA0BVD, Aloys/PA3DAT, Wietse/PA3DDJ, Berend/
PA3FAL, Eric/PA3FKN, Douwe/PD0RXP, Laurens/PD3LHS, Andries/
PE1PIX, Peter/PE1PIX, Joeri/PE5JW, Gialt/PE1OLM and Gerben/
PG5M. As this is not a permanent contest location, all equipment
has to be transported to the island and installed and setup
just before the contest. The list of equipment is extensive,
including 8 transceivers, 13 antenna configurations, masts,
more than 2 km of coax cable, etc. which altogether is more
than 2500 KG. For the low bands they will use: 160m - 2 phased
verticals, 80m - 4 square dipoles and 40m - 4 square verticals.
Time and dates: 1200z, Saturday, February 14th, to 1200z,
Sunday, February 15th. For more information on the PACC Contest,

NA-122. Operators Josep/EA3BT and his XYL Nuria/EA3WL will operate as
HI9/EA3BT and/or HI9/EA3WL from Cayo Levantado Island in the
Dominican Republic's Coastal Islands Group, January 21-27th.
Nuria will operates SSB while Josep handles the CW. Activity
will be mainly SSB and the Digital modes, on 80-10 meters.
They will use a Yaesu FT-900, w/Ameritron ALS-600 amp into a
Cushcraft MA5B antenna for 20-10 meters, and a Butternut HF2V
for 80/40 meters. QSL via EA3BT.
NA-223. Members of the Russian Robinson Club will be active as KL7RRC
from Ogliuga Island, Alaska, between July 21st and August 3rd.
Activity will be on 160-6 meters including an entry in the
RSGB IOTA Contest (July 25-26th). Operators mentioned are:

for Europe!: "The KP1-5 Project is very aware of the need for KP5
(Desecheo) in Europe. Previous DXpeditions contended with an obstructed
path to Europe making working this #3 most needed country difficult

reached that will allow antennas to be placed on a ridgeline above the

LIGHTHOUSE ACTIVITY (Operation Extended). Members of the "Old Barney
Amateur Radio Club (OBARC) have extended their activity as N2OB/150 and
N2OB/LH through March 31st, due to popular demand. Operations will be
on all bands and modes available. This activity is to celebrate the
relighting and the 150th anniversary of the "Barnegat Lighthouse" (nick-
named "Old Barney"). See OPDX.889 for more details. N2OB/150 stations
will be operating from various locations around "Ocean County". Some
operations from the lighthouse property may be possible, and the callsign
N2OB/LH will be used which will count for working the lighthouse and
IOTA NA-111. A nice color photo QSL is being planned showing the relighting

LY1000, LITHUANIA (Special Event). To mark the "Millennium of Lithuania"
(see http://www.lietuvai1000.lt/index.en.htm ), members of the Amateur
Radio Society of Lithuania (LRMD) is issuing a special wooden plaque to
those who can fulfil the required following conditions:
Contact Special Event Stations with the prefix LY1000 (14 active
stations) or other LY stations from 01-JAN-2009 to 31-DEC-2009 and
collect 1000 points. Points are earned as follows:
A. European stations: 150 points for each contact with the Special Event
Station LY1000 (At least 5 contacts necessary.) 50 points with other
LY station.
B. DX stations: 300 points for each contact with the Special Event
Station LY1000 (At least 3 contacts necessary.) 100 points with
other LY station.
Applications deadline - December 31, 2010. Please send certified list of
contacts (no QSL please) and payment to the LRMD Award Manager. Please
give your E-mail address with your application, in case they have to
contact you by E-mail. PRICE: 10 Euro or equivalent in USD.

QRP NEWS. The 2009 QRP Challenge is now going on as of Janaury 1st. The
event is to "Promote QRP portable operations with 'light' equipment, as

operation will take place this week between January 16-22nd. The callsign

SV/A, MOUNT ATHOS (Topband). Monk Apollo, Sv2ASP/A, has been showing up
on 160 meters. He was on 1843 kHz at between/around 0545-0615z on December
29th, and between/around 0538-1612z on January 9th. He "may" show up again
between/around the same time this week. Agelos, SV3RF, states, "Although
he uses a low dipole barefoot he hears quiet well being in an area free
of noise."
T33, BANABA ISLAND. Udo, DL9HCU, who was active as T30HC from Tarwa Island
this past week (up to Janaury 10th), may be headed to Banaba Island
(according to several sources) and sign T33HC. QSL via his home callsign.
T8, PALAU (Reminder). Operators Mike/JA6EGL, Yas/JA6UBY, Yu/JE6DND and
Hiro/JA6KYU will be active as T88SM, T88CP, T88HK and T88HS, respectively,
from Koror Island (OC-009), this week between January 16-18th. Activity
will be 80-10 meters CW/SSB. QSL via their home callsigns (direct only).
TO4, REUNION ISLAND (AF-016). Daniel, F5LGQ, will be active as TO4IPA
between January 13-31st.
TS7, TUNISIA (Update/IOTA Op). Members of the France Provins ARC (F6KOP)
and some international operators are now active from Kerkennah Island
(AF-073) using the callsign TS7C until January 19th. The team had some
problems with customs with some of the transmitters, but by the time
you read this, they should have all the stations (six) on the air. QSL

VP8, FALKLAND ISLANDS (Reminder/Update/YL Op!). Just a reminder that an
international group of YLs will activate the Falkland Islands (SA-002)
between January 17-31st. Each operator will be signing with the callsign
"VP8YL*", where the third letter of the suffix will be assigned to each
YL operator at beginning of the operation. There will be 8 YLs from the
following countries active from Falkland Islands:

1 from the Netherlands 1 from USA
1 from Italy 1 from Norway
1 from Greece
YL operators mentioned at present include: Janet/VP8AIB, Chantal/PA3GQG,
Unni/LA6RHA, Jeanie/WA6UVF, Mio/JR3MVF, Liz/M0ACL, Victoria/SV2KBS,
Nicky/M5YLO and Ruth/IT9ESZ. The YL team will fly into the Falklands on
January 17th. Together with Janet, VP8AIB, and other YLs from Falkland
will all activate VP8YL* for 14 days. All the YLs coming from around the
world will be getting their VP8 callsign on Monday, January 19th. During
the first weekend they will operate as VP8YLC which is the YL club's
callsign on Falkland. The YLs will be operating from QTHs in Stanley
(one from the home of Bob/VP8LP and Janet/VP8AIB and the other from a
hut not far from Bob/Janet's home). Some of the YLs will bring along
their own HF rigs. Some will stay for a week and the others for two
weeks. The activity will be mainly on SSB, on all bands (80-10m), but
only 20 hours every day. There will be 4 stations with the following
antennas: two SteppIR 3 element beam and two vertical SteppIR.

XR27, CHILE (Special Event). Chilean operators from the Atacama region
will activate special event station XR27RAID between Janaury 11-24th.
Operations will be on all bands using CW, SSB and PSK. QSL via HA1AG,
by the Bureau or direct to: Zoli Pitman, Somogyi Bela UT 18, Gyor 9024,
HUNGARY. QSL are also "OK" via CE6TBN. Activity is to celebrate the
running of the Association of Raidistas de Atacama's (ALTAR) jeepera
adventure, the 27th Raid Atacama Desert Trophy which takes place between

ZF, CAYMAN ISLANDS (NA-016). John, K6AM, will be active as ZF2AM during
the ARRL DX CW Contest (February 21-22th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/High-
Power entry. QSL via K6AM, direct or by the Bureau or LoTW.
ZK2, NIUE (OC-040). Chris, ZL1CT (GM3WOJ), will be active as ZK2V between
May 16th and June 20th. He states that this 5 week DXpedition is not a
"Holiday DXpedition" but it aims to give as many stations their first QSO
with ZK2 as possible. This is the cyclone season, so operation may be
interrupted by electrical storms. Resources are limited, so activity will
be mainly on 80/40/20/15 meters using CW and SSB, with some 30/17/12 meter
activity and RTTY. Planned operations include entries in the 2009 ARRL CW
and Phone Contests. QSL via N3SL. More details will be forthcoming.
