Re: [Dx4win] FW: lost QSO's

2013-05-19 Thread ALAN ZACK
Dick,

One thing to watch out for. If you had the ~xb log saved in the memory
stick, renamed it, then had DX4WIN find it and load it from the memory stick
DX4WIN will now try to save your new log entries to the memory stick and not
to the regular SAVE folder.

You should do the following:

1. With DX4WIN open and running go to FILE and in the drop down window click
on SAVE AS. Your DX4WIN save folder will open. Click on KS0M.dxl and rename
it so it will be safe. Try a new name like KS0Mold.dxl.

2. Go back to your memory stick and copy the KS0M.dxl log file that is saved
in the memory stick.

3. Copy that KS0M.dxl file from the memory stick to the DX4WIN SAVE folder
and paste it there.

4. Now in the DX4WIN/SAVE folder you should have 2 log files, KS0M.dxl and
KS0Mold.dxl.

5. Close the DX4WIN log so that all you see is the small top window with
FILE RADIO HELP along the top.

6. Click on FILE then OPEN. Your DX4WIN SAVE folder will appear. Click on
KS0M.dxl then OPEN to open the logging window.

7. Now with the logger window open Go to FILTER then COUNT and make note of
the total QSO's it shows in the KS0M.dxl log. Also look at the contacts in
the log and see if they look like they are all there.

8. Now go back to the main FILE menu and click on CLOSE. The logging window
will close.

9. Repeat step 6 except this time select the KS0Mold.dxl (not KS0M.dxl)
file.

10. Repeat step 7 to compare the KS0M.dxl saved log to the KS0Mold.dxl saved
log.

11. Decide which one is the most accurate and make it your real KS0M.dxl log
file. There is a good chance they may be identical or there is a chance one
has more QSO's than the other. Whichever one you decide to use should be
named KS0M.dxl.

Now when you open DX4WIN it will look for and open the KS0M.dxl log file in
the DX4WIN/SAVE folder.

Hope this helps. Congrads on being 87 yrs old and still being able to figure
this stuff out. I am a young fart at 69 but still at times struggle. But we
were weaned on IBM clones with no Hard Drives where you had to stick a 7
inch floppy into the drive with the DOS program commands to let it boot up
then put in a different floppy to run a program. It was a big day for me
when I paid almost $200 for a 50 kb Hard Drive so I could put DOS on it so I
didn't need a floppy to boot up the PC.

Jim / AD1C

I finally have my full log back, thanks to you. I could not get the ks0m.~xb
file into DX4WIN at first. I finally saved it on a memory stick, changed
the name to ks0m.dxl and then had DX4WIN open it and save it. All QSO's
through May 12 are now back in the log. It sure is a relief to get it all
back. It took me a while to understand what you were telling me. But, when
you are 4 months away from being 87 years old it just takes a little longer
to understand.

I did put a call in the log and I did see the modified sign pop up. I was
not aware of why it did that. It has been a while since I read the DX4WIN
Manuel JFrom now on it is backup, backup, backup every time I add calls.

Thank you very much for you good help.

 Jim,
Thanks for the help. I have looked for all the extensions ending in
.dxl and ~xl. I can only find 3 .~xl and one (current) .dxl file.
The .~xl files are for February and March.
I found a KS0M.~XB file and opened it in notebook. It was difficult to
read
but I found some calls near the end and they are not in my current log.
How
can I put this file into my DX4WIN log, or this be done ?

Copy it to a name with a .DXL extension, as I said:

You'll probably need to search for all *xl files you can find. The
latest/largest one is the best you can do. You will have to give it a
.DXL
extension for DX4WIN to be able to open it (if it's a .~xl, .dxb or
 .~xb file).

Jim,

I hope that you were one of the volunteer software developers they recruited
to contribute to this project. I know you would do a good job. Funny they
don't mention these changes on the regular LOTW page
http://www.arrl.org/logbook-of-the-world.

I hope this will be an easy update. It took me awhile to get LOTW working
for me. I'd hate to mess up my present TQSL, TQSLCert and the TrustedQSL
files.

I would recommend waiting a few days before updating. The initial flurry of
installs has uncovered a few problems that we would like to fix, largely
due to ARRL moving the Logbook webpages to a new host.
