Re: [Dx4win] VK5 DX Zones
When I uploaded my log to ARRL LOTW and then did the download from LOTW to DX4WIN the down loaded report showed VK5DOC was zone 29. The root cause of this problem is that VK5DOC supplied the wrong zone info when he opened his LOTW account. He does not show his zone on his QRZ.COM page. So then when I downloaded my 2021 log entries to the DX Marathon worksheet it chose VK5DOC for my Zone 29 entry. I could have used VK6EI, VK6XI, or VK6LW for my 2021 Zone 29 entry had I known better This has taught me that after I download my LOTW report to DX4WIN and search for IMPORT for errors in the notes for this call widow to DOUBLE CHECK when a discrepancy is shown. I believe I may have incorrectly changed my log to show VK5DOC in zone 29 when the IMPORT alert showed it to be Zone 29. Now, to this day, even with several CTY file updates (via the HELP>CHECK FOR UPDATE) when I type VK5DOC into the call window (pretending a new log entry) it still shows Zone 29. I don't know why when I have the latest CTY file it still logs as Zone 29. We are at the mercy of what people use for their zones, grids, IOTA number, etc, when they set up their LOTW account. I was not aware of what VK calls fall into what zones so assumed the zone for VK5DOC downloaded from LOTW was correct. It was not. This is why I always search the "Notes for this QSO" field for the word IMPORT after doing any import, especially "Confirm LoTW using ADIF file". That VK5 QSO would have been flagged as having a mismatch. As many have pointed out, VK5 is CQ Zone 30. Only VK6 and VK8 are CQ Zone 29. Once all import exceptions have been resolved, there is a Multiple QSO Operation to delete the remaining import notes. The ADIF to Marathon conversion program I wrote: https://ad1c.us/software/marathon/ does not do any parsing or interpretation of the ADIF data (i.e. callsigns), nor does it do any checking. As someone else wrote in an earlier reply, Garbage In, Garbage Out. I'm sorry you lost a zone in the competition. There are a couple of things to keep in mind: 1. DX4WIN does not store the country prefix or CQ Zone with the QSO. This is determined by the country file each time you load your log into DX4WIN. 2. One thing that was new about DX4WIN 9.0x compared to earlier versions is that it now keeps a local file of callsign/zone exceptions that only apply to your log. These have priority of the country file. When a zone is changed, for example, during the LoTW import of that VK5 QSO, that zone is stored in the local file. I never need these, and occasionally will delete the file, which can be found in your SAVE directory (along with its backup): 3/05/2022 20:39 849 usrexcpt.dat 1/27/2022 10:35 811 usrexcpt.~at The problem with this local file is that once a zone is (incorrectly) changed, all future QSOs logged with this station will show the same incorrect zone. Also there, is no way to examine this file to see what's in there, or why. I could try to figure it out, but I have never had the need. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , https://ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Dx4win] VK5 DX Zones
How does DX4WIN determine DX Zones? By the country list? I have the latest country list in my DX4WIN I just received my 2021 DX Marathon UBN results back and I got dinged for entering VK5DOC for Z29. The VK5DOC qrz.com page does not show what zone he is in. When I logged him in my DX4WIN log it was entered as Z29, not Z30. The QSO is confirmed with LoTW. It shows him in Z29, not Z30. When I asked John K9EL, the contest manager, why I was dinged for a wrong entry for Z29 here was his reply: I also use DX4Win and if I enter VK5DOC, it says Zone 30. I have never heard that any VK5 stations can be in Zone 29. I have been doing this contest since 2008. John may very well be right but why would my version of DX4WIN show Z29 and his show Z30? I only have one entry for VK5DOC on 07/03/2021. In my log for Z29 I have many VK6, VK8, and VK9 stations but only one VK5, the VK5DOC shows as Z29. It is a mystery to me. 73 Alan K7ACZ Alan Zack Amateur Radio Station K7ACZ __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
