Strictly speaking e-gold is a medium of exchange but not a currency. The term currency usually means a debt instrument. According to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary http://www.m-w.com currency 2 a : something (as coins, treasury notes, and banknotes) that is in circulation as a medium

I think you are mistaken. E-Gold IS denominated in grams of gold. When you see "10.230001" grams of gold, then this is the unit of measure. This will not change. But it's also denominated in grams of other precious metals. What say you then about grams of Silver, Platinum, and Palladium? If

In the early days of e-gold if my memory remembers, one could for free change one's holdings between metals, but now E-Gold has spun that off to third party market makers who charge a hefty percentage fee to exchance one metal for another. This I consider the worst change in the wrong direction

Yes, but it's like apples and oranges. If you have 5 grams of e-gold and 3 grams of e-silver, then you must express the total using BOTH identifiers. It's not possible to say that the value is 'x' grams of e-'something' because the price of silver fluctuates with respect to the price of gold.
