Agree with most of what you say, Doug. However, I first joined X12 in May
1987 - when membership was in the 300 range - and then saw it climb to the
600-700 range in the early 1990s - and then saw the rapid decline in 1999
going forward. So, my observation is that X12 membership peaked in the

the day. When retail and automotive pushed EDI membership went up. When a
mass was implemented, membership went down. When X12N TR3's were mandated,
membership went up. When implemented, membership went down.
EDI, like many highly technical, forward-leaning technologies draws a large
amount of interest during its growth. However, as standards mature,
technology stabilizes, and adoption becomes pervasive, you will see that
