I notice when I listen to my CW on a separate reciever that there appears to be

Thanks Alan. I will check that soon. When I moved away from my property the
raspy sound faded. So I am wondering whether my FT-817 is having phasey PLL
noise being so close to the antenna. I will get an on air check to see if
others notice it before I open up the rig again. I have had it
John - Sony may still offer decently priced repair/swap. I don't know if
there is any Sony service center near you but there is a large facility in

repaired...it looks like they gave me a replacment unit in

I think I have solved the problem with raspy audio and buzzy cw. It seems to
be from some common mode voltage or current on my tx line caused by an
unbalanced antenna (broken wire shortening 1 length of my doublet).

Tom,
Sony has repair centers that cover regional areas and charge flat
rates to service their products.
I find it hard to believe you got nowhere when you called them.
Did you actually call a Sony Service Center??
For the cost for shipping and flat rate service, you may get your

The MBT-100 has been sold - Thanks to all who inquired.

Listening to the on-air signal on a nearby receiver is a really *tough* test
of the transmitter. Things such as hum or noise on the signal that someone a
short distance away would never hear will blast out loud and clear.
That can be good. If the signal is clean on a nearby receiver, it's
Does anyone on the list having any experince with PSKMeter and the K2?
I have just assembled a kit from KF6VSG. Well, maybe it's me, but I can't
make it work together with my K2 and my computer (SoundBlaster 5.1 Live).

Yes, the PSKMeter works well with my K2. I have had problems with the
PSKMeter if the Feedback Gain control is not set correctly. It has been
a while since I used it so I can't tell you what I did, but play with
the Feedback Gain control and see if that doesn't help.

Okay, K1 # is alive and well! and I have installed the 4 band module

I was just playing with it and it receives very well on all 4 bands, but

What's the difference between a PN and a PNA transistor? When used as
a switch, can a PN be used as a substitute for the PNA? Thanks.

Looking at the A suffix , it appears they are graded units having a
higher breakdown voltage across the elements. It should work anywhere a
without suffix is specified.
The PN should work in PN A circuits that do not exceed its element
voltage ratings, which if you are
So I'm building a KAT100 tuner and everything is going
along fine until I get to T1 and RFC2. According to
the manual T1 is supposed to be wound on a FT50-43

Unfortunately all I have left in the kit are two .5
inch cores, one dark grey, the
Problem is: the K1 is offset for lower sideband so you will get garbles on
17 meters!
You'd get the same on 20 if you could tune that high.
The K1 is primarily a CW only rig.

Stephen,
Use the dark gray core to wind T1 - it should be the proper core.
Check again for a dark gray core that is a bit smaller 0.37 inches diameter.
If you cannot locate it, ask for one from Elecraft for use at RFC2. The red
core is normal for powdered iron cores and likely is a T50-2. It
Hey All,
Just got my first contact with the subject KX1. I finished it two days ago
and have been running tests since.
It was with OT1A! 14009 MHz with a really crummy inverted v. I appreciate

Ed Lambert,
My understanding is the A is the military spec version. Maybe I'm
wrong, but it's got to be something like that, either that or a
slightly later version.. you might try googling a bit, spec
sheets for common parts can be pretty easy to find, I'm always
looking up the simple stuff
