Folks... for your enjoyment and (hopefully) delight):
To observe the 90th anniversary of the First Transcontinental Relay
of Formal Message Traffic, the Mid-MO Amateur Radio Club of Jefferson
City, Missouri, will activate a 24-hour Special Event Station using
call sign W9C beginning 2000 UTC

Jim,
In an ideal world, the tuner is only an impedance transformation device -
but the name of this RF Ground game is the elimination of common mode
current from the transmission line and equipment in the shack so that all
devices, including the tuner can work as expected with no extra RF

Speaking of knobs for the K2, does anybody know of alternate knob types for
the knobs other than the tuning knob?
I think that a K2 would look even better with small, white-line-indexed,
fluted, skirted knobs like the ones on the old Hammarlund receivers.
I have seen a few of those from Mouser,
I've always been happy with the Factory Knob with the Finger Dimple, but
then again I almost never touch the radio, I let Ham Radio Deluxe and DM780
do that.

Good morning all,
I put the finishing touches on #5813 last night after all the final tests
passed without pause and output power 10 watts on
all bands 160 - 10. Within 10 minutes of hooking it to my folded dipole, I
worked a CN2 in Morocco on 40m, followed by CG2FET in Canada running a special
Probably heresy to mention this here but I have been wondering about using
the tuning knob from my Argonaut V on my K2.has some good weight to it
and the recessed finger dimple makes tuning a snap.
I gotta check with Ten Tec and see if the knobs are available and at what
cost.
Why would you want to change?
Being natural has it's own beauty, witness too much makeup on a lovely lady.
And why does the ft-900 knob remind me of Jimmy Durante? :)

Hi all,
I fear that with all the years of discussing a different knob for the K2
that eventually some of us will have a knob on our K2 so large (like from a
boatanchor) that one will have to rotate the radio instead of the knob in
order to tune the thing. ;o)
At least my cat likes the stock
The cat pics are too funny! Thanks.
We used to have a yellow lab named Dusty who would do silly little
things, often so stupid they were funny.
I read that crows are smarter than cats or dogs. I think it's true. I
don't think it really takes much :-)

Just checked with Elecraft, as I was seeing a (16lb) shipment headed
this way on a very slow route (been sitting in California for the last
24hrs). I had ordered the K2 last Friday, and requested 3 day shipment
so that I could start on the base unit this week. I went ahead and
ordered the

What you suggest, using a separate ground rod connected only to your

Good point, David. However, you may be surprised that probably won't
take a week. Everything that I have ordered from Aptos has arrived here

the USPS serves you as well!
Have fun and enjoy the assembly.

Thanks for the info, Larry.
At QRP levels, virtually any QSO on 160 meters is cause for celebration
:) Anyone who hasn't tried 160 meters, whether QRP or QRO, should
get on for at least a few minutes and give it a try. If you have a K2
with 160 m installed as well as a KAT2 or KAT100 ATU,
I use a 500' loop and work a multi-state area CW with my K2. The loop
is 10 to 30 ft high, mostly on the low end of that range and through
trees and shrubs, and fed with 300 ohm ladder line to a BL2. The height
isn't a big deal on 160m as it is pretty much impossible to get any

I tried a couple of alternate tuning knobs on my K2.
I tired using the Knob from my Ten Tec Argo V, I think the shaft size was

I just know that it did not work.

I agree with Chuck. I have all the Yaesu knobs because I have all the
Yaesu rigs. The K2 knob with the finger dimple is excellent. I think
you need to be careful about the amount of pressure the knob has on the
felt. At first I had it to tight. After a few tries I got excellent
feel with

Agreed, the F-Dimp is all important. And after all the hours spent adjusting

I like the Elecraft knob. Works fine, looks good, and isn't an additional cost
to the kit. Looking at my Yaesu and

Bob,
The length of conductor from the rig chassis to the eventual ground rod,
including the length of the rod to the physical dirt, all makes a resonant
system. If such a ground lead is 1/4 wave or a substantial length at a
given band, you will have a poor RF ground.
As someone said, you need
Rich - Connect a cable with RCA male plugs on each end (typical audio cable
from a stereo) from the Relay Out RCA socket on the rear of the KPA100 to
the Antenna Relay socket on the rear of the AL-811 and follow the directions
in the AL-811 manual to tune the amplifier up! Yes, the hookup
Just add a one-way valve. And the heat and gravity will do the rest (like a
