This is interesting. I've noticed the K2 AGC doesn't seem to work like
other rigs. Specifically, the K2's AGC seems to be less aggressive in
reducing IF gain in the presence of a big signal. This means the K2
produces more audio dynamic range than other rigs I've used. The quiet

You might find my AGC measurements on the K2 useful, where I compare measured AGC
response (audio output verus input signal level) for a K2, a Racal RA6790/GM, a Cubic
R3030 and a Drake R7. The K2's curve is different and that may explain some of the
K2 sound in my opinion. The data is
I enjoyed to build up the KPA 100. Transmit test with 5 watts was ok. But with
POWER control set to output 20 watts power rises to 110 watts. If POWER control
is set to 11 watts or higher I get always 110 watts output with good signal
quality, but power selection is impossible.
Anyone have
Harmut,
Is this a new KPA100 that has worked before or is it a new build?
Are you able to control the power output below 5 watts with the power
control with the KPA100 attached?
Can you control power on the base K2 if you remove the KPA100?
The answers to those questions will indicate where to
Hello Don,
thanks for Your mail.
Here are my answers:
Is this a new KPA100 that has worked before or is it a new build?
My KPA 100 is just new build.
Are you able to control the power output below 5 watts with the power
control with the KPA100 attached?
Yes, I can.
Can you control power on
[Gregg R. Lengling] what you need to look at is the SWR/Power bridge circuit
in the amp. I had a lightning hit that screwed up my amp and caused it to
always be full power and it turned out this is the circuit that caused the
problem. The VRFDET line is used to control the output power of the
Will the soon-to-be-sold new Amplifier(s) coming out
by Elecraft - be able to be fully driven by a bare
bones basic K2? As always a fan of separate units;
xcvr, amp, tuner, swr/power metering. I'm trying to
end up with a CW/SSB decent wattage K2. I can't get
myself to go the top-cover amplifier
Hi folks,
I am here in Santo Domingo for a work assignment and have brought along my K2
#4409 (QRP) and a Super Antenna MP-1 vertical (10-80 plus wire antennas).
Modes: CW/SSB only.
I will be in the Domincan Republic for 3 weeks, (2/26 thru 3/16).
I will be active from one of the three
Fred, you're gonna need the KPA100 to drive the Elecraft amplifier(s).

For full output, you'll need 100 watts from the K2. It'll surely provide
reduced output with reduced drive, but I don't know how much you'll get with
10 watts drive.
I don't understand your concern about the K2/100. The K2 was *designed* as a
QRO rig! It just happened that Wayne/Eric released
What new amplifiers??? You mean that empty box that Elecraft has
been toting around the hamfests for the last year? I don't think there is
really an amplifier in there. I think they have just been shining us on. If
there were REALLY a KPA-800 1500, we would be using them right now.
Hartmut,
If you can control the less than 11 watt power with the KPA100 attached,
that deepens the mystery. It also tells me that the VRFDET signal is
working from the KPA100.
Do you have the trimmer pots R26 and R27 set near their mid-rotation
positions as they should be.

I need to correct the statement below. I should have said, For full output,
you'll need more than the 10 watts the low power version of the K2
provides.
As I went on to say, I don't know how much you'll get with only 10 watts of
power.

My K2, #5943, is having a bit of an issue. I've just finished the last
construction stage (except for final assembly) and have yet to do the
final alignment. The issue is, I've got a problem somewhere around U6 on
the RF board. During CAL PLL, its input from U5 decreases steadily in
voltage, as it
Hi Fred,
I fully appreciate the quality of Elecraft products. However, they still
need to have a marketable amplifier. In other words, to cover their RD,
they should aim at selling the amplifier not only to the K2 users.
My barefoot K2 can drive both my ICPW-1 and Quadra System to 350-400
I've got for sale an unbuilt KPA100 amplifier and KAT100-1 antenna
tuner.
Purchased over a year ago but never got around to building them.
$500 for both shipped to anywhere in CONUS. A savings of over $125 off
list price and that's not even including shipping.
Separately:
$310 for KPA100
Mike,
You most likely do have a thermistor board problem - a short from pin 2(and
3) to ground (pins 4 and 5) could cause the situation you describe - in that
case, the op amp would be producing full output with any voltage input above
zero volts.
