My P3 started displaying persistent clumps of noise across each band. These
clumps reoccurred at about every 72KH over most bands. I thought I had a rig
problem so I emailed Gary at Elecraft. Based on my description of the
problem he concluded the noise was not coming from the K3 or the P3. He
Hi John,
thanks for clarification. But i think he meant the adjustment of levels
(KDVR3) for on the air playback.
These levels are NOT adjustable, for the monitoring in the headphones or
speakers you are right.

This is the signature of a switching power supply. They are everywhere,
and most of them are noise RF noise generators.
Jim, Fred, Et Al,
Just a note: Some switching power supply bricks are noisy, even
if the supplied unit is off. Had a View Sonic monitor like that. Because
I could turn it off, It gave the false impression that it was not the

In typical SOC fashion, we inadvertently scheduled this first K8DD
Memorial CW Bash to overlap the QRP ARCI Spring Party. Not to worry,
the exchange can easily be expanded to accommodate both events during
the overlap as per the following example (M0SOC):

I've also discovered local noise sources from the P3 display - much more
useful than the single frequency response of the K3 alone - a VERY useful
diagnostic tool.
But it gets even better. I had one switching supply type noise that I
couldn't isolate to anywhere in the shack. I wanted a

I am tracking down my noise on 2 mtrs, but that has to be done with the K3
and P3 in the shack. Can't wait to find the cause, it is somewhere in the
house.
Not in the shack. Probably computer component generated.

Mine is factory assembled with no light so it is probably and installation

Aaaargh! Good catch Barry. The output of the KDVR3 that you hear in Monitor
gets whatever compression and equalization you've dialed in.

I use both ears and I want to thank Elecraft for the excellent diversity
obtained in the K3 design. I hadn't used it much on 30m with my 1wl beverage,
because the beverage is too short. I don't have room here in the back yard for

On my newly assembled kit K3/10 without the internal ATU, I've noticed
that the SWR readouts are higher than those on my K2 which agrees with
my analog inline meter. Into a 50 ohm dummy load all three readings are
1.0:1, but on an actual antenna the readings differ.

I also had a light leakage problem. The only way to correct it is to remove

Steve,
I tried to poke the blocker strip with a strait pin through the button holes.
That did not work for me. Disassembly and repositioning the blocker strip was
the only way I was able to block the light. Poking with a pin is worth a try,
