VHF SKN activities were interrupted tonight when I switched to 2m and
all of the buttons went wonky -- some completely dead; others performing
unrelated functions. When the sanity checks (re-seat boards, re-load
firmare) failed to make a difference, I started crawling the schematics.
Since this morning 1/1/2012, K3 #6118 is on air in Germany.

Many, including me, have had that problem where one of the front panel
switches hung up. You might try exercising all the switches to see if it
clears. Otherwise maybe one of the switches has stuck on permanently.

doubles as a center insulator and attach point for the raising rope. The loss
for RG-8X will be about 1 db, so you will not notice. I have had very good

It took me 8 hours and I did not rush. I think the average is about 8 hours.
I found it fairly easy although I forgot to put in one screw and had to take
the front panel board thing off and do it again. But, that only cost me about
15 minutes.

looking at Rev. C dated October 16, 2008 - at that time there were K3
being shipped that already had the change.
So, there is a *very* high probability that your K3 already has the
change since it is only a year old.

A while back I found a used Roland Mobile Cube stereo amplified portable
speaker set at the TRW swap meet ($5) and to my surprise it works pretty
well as a laptop amp, portable PA (mic needed), or as a mono or stereo amp
for just about any mic or line level driver (including radios like
4-40 screws are really quite easy to twist in half with a power screwdriver.
That's easy to fix if you have a spare. It's also easy to rip the threads
out of the PEM nuts. That's not so easy to fix.
That's why Wayne was clear that we should specify *no* power screwdriver in
the assembly manual.
Take a look at the TDK Lambda switch mode power supplies. The LS50-15 that
I have is pretty quiet, with output voltage adjustable from 13.5v to 16.5v,
about $20 from Newark Electronics. The LS35-12 is a bit cheaper if you
really only need 12 volts.
I installed the KAT3 over the weekend and the construction and calibration
was successful. This evening I hooked everything back up to check reception,
tuning and swr. I have it set to AUTO, when I tap the ATU TUNE switch the
tuner does its thing and I read a 1.0:1 swr on the K3 meter. I have a
