Bearing in mind the cost of a K3, it might be a good idea to buy a cheap
modern second hand Icom / Kenwood / Yaesu first and see how you get on with
them. Meanwhile saving up for a K3. Then if the cheap rig does not suit and
you decide to get the K3 you will truly appreciate the improvement.

yes, LIFEpo is quite a good replacement. K2 equipped with modern internal
battery will be much lighter and good for portable operation.
Recently, there have been discussions about K2 Vs KX3. In terms of size and
capability, KX3 is a winner. However, if you are going to some really remote

I've never installed the batter option in my K2, so I'm flying blind on
this topic. I checked out the site you mentioned, and they have several
battery sizes that would seem to be appropriate for the K2. Which one

Hi Paul
I am; and have been a beta-tester for over 10 years. TRX-Manager has always
worked well IF you have a good serial connection - which means either
an 'on-board' connector; or, if USB is the only choice - the preferred USB
adapter uses the FTDI chipset to do the conversion. Laurent (the
Hi Robert,
My post was general in nature.
For my KX3, I use an external 3300 mAH LiFePO4 pack from:
http://www.batteryspace.com/lifepo426650battery128v3300mah42wh7aratewpcb.aspx
Using the suggested 1.5A charger for above, the battery charge voltage
is 13.9V during the end of the charge cycle.
John thanks for that information was wondering the same thing myself if the
K3/KX3 were supported.

Well I finally think I have it figured out. I am now using my K2 (home

Thanks for your reply. Can you recommend a place/site/article where I
can get myself broadly educated in this area so that I can interpret

I can see a Red LED lit and blinking intermittantly inside the KX3 casing

Robin,
It is normal. Current draw from this very tiny low intensity LED is not
significant. This is what Fred, KE7X posted in the Yahoo KX3 group concerning
the meaning of the flashes:
Here is what the KXBC3 LED blink patterns mean:
Low intensity single blink every 0.5 seconds.

Hello Phil,
I am still wondering if anyone has a part number of a nice Li battery of any
chemistry that fits into the K2 battery space. Most of the batteries I have
found are too large. There are tons of satisfactory batteries that I can use
external to the K2, but I prefer a self contained

You will be pleased with the KX3. Get a good antenna for you situation and
you will find QRP is fun. Then order the amp and tuner later and you will
have a awesome 100 watt radio.

Great Bill!
I can tell you from experience that 10 dB (1.5 S-units) makes avoiding
interference with your and your neighbor's electronics at lot easier in an
apartment setting. And, with an antenna about 60 feet long (folded around
corners, etc) strung near the ceiling of a top floor 2nd story
The answer is no. It would be a huge safety issue for the KPA to automatically
turn on, especially if it is set to go to OPER on power-on.
The question is what is turning it off, and why. Correct that issue and you
will have the proper operation.

On the antenna being a problem...
A nice thing about the KX3 is portability. Get yourself a bow-and-arrow, some
dracon line (if needed), wire, and go find a park with nice trees and string up
your temporary antenna. I have strung up a 20-meter dipole up about 35 feet in
a county park.
Hi Don,
Thanks for the input.
I checked the current and when I can get it to put out more than a couple
watts I get about a 4 amp draw which seems normal.
What I am finding is most of the test voltages are within range but running
at the end of their adjustments. Such as the lna at 230 mv
I'm trying to piece all the software and cabling to remote my K-line. I
just discovered the P command in the KPA500 Programmer's Reference that
is supposed to turn on the KPA500 as long as the rear panel switch is on.
I'm not the adventuresome type. Has anyone tried this?

Just remembered the KPAUtility. The P command works!!! This will save me
some cabling!

Thanks to all who answered me re birdies on every CW band in my K3. It turns

With KXAT3 you have a standalone radio with one button tuning and automatic

and has low losses on all bands is not easy.
With T1, a very efficient balun could be a jumper made of RG-174 looped a
