Hi All
I am thinking of buying this accessory but I am a bit confused.!
I use a 4-El SteppIR beam for the HF bands as both my receive transmit
antenna with my K3.
Would I need to set up a separate receive antenna to use the PR6-10 Preamp
or can I use it with my existing TX/RX antenna?
Ray
Ray,
It fits neatly between the RX in and out BNCs on the back panel. You then
select the separate receiver input via the RXant button of the front
panel. I am away from the K3 at the moment but that is what I did
successfully with an ANC noise reducer once. I too am thinking seriously
about
Ray Stephen,
And of course you will need the KXV3 or KXV3A board in your K3. Further,
when you press the RX ANT button for 6, 10, and 12 meters it will be
remembered so that you don't have to push it each time you use those bands.
And lastly, the preamp is activated by a single wire connection
Ray,
The short answer is no - you do not need a separate RX antenna, but it
can also be used with an RX antenna if desired.
If you do not already have it, you will need to install the KXV3 or
KXV3A option.
The instructions for connecting and using the preamp are in the Preamp
manual.
73,
I've always soldered pins to the wire and used a dab of glue on the plastic
pieces to keep them together..I've never had a failure or wire pull from
the pin.
What I don't get are the hams who rail against the Power Poles but never have
done any power.current testing. I did and they work
No indication which SPE amp. It makes a difference because IIRC the 1K
tuner can't be bypassed. The 2K can. I use the 2K-FA. There's no need to
use the K3 tuner with the 2K as its input SWR is satisfactorily low. 30W
from K3 drives 2K to the legal limit. Off, the 2K tuner is switched out

But there's one anomaly. The Band change buttons work backwards from
every other piece of Elecraft gear. On my K1 and K2 Band+ takes me to
the next higher frequency band. On the XG3, Band+ takes me to the

Eric,
I know, that was a bit 'confusing' to me at first, but if you think of
it as up or down the row of band LEDs, it is easier to deal with.

This was a subject of debate among the engineering staff. We tried it both ways
during field testing and settled on the present behavior. After you've had time
to bond with your XG3, you will come to appreciate the subtle wisdom in this
decision. Or not :)

Interesting, I push the wrong button first *every* time :-)
Despite that, I have to say that it is by far and away the most useful bit
of test gear (apart from a multimeter and a scope) that I have ever owned!

Reminds me of the classic discussions I have had over the years regarding
band/frequency changes. You're going up? down?

In over 50 yrs of ham radio, I've never heard ANYONE on a lower band say they
are going down to 10 meters, or 6
I spent a couple of hours with it on the bench this afternoon and I
gravitated towards your suggestion, Don. Once that became a habit, I
quit hitting the wrong button every time.
It's already a great addition to the shack and the workbench.

Well, I HAVE heard of people going down to 10 meters. And 160 meters

Same here -- I've built at least a hundred pairs of Power Poles. I use
them not only for ham gear, but for all sorts of equipment that gets
powered from
Powerpoles are entirely suited to purpose, if (of course) fitted correctly.
If connectors are pulling apart and they are fitted correctly, there is
obviously far too much pull stress on the connecting cable, which must be
relieved by some means.
Simple...'just do it'.
