I have flown with a QRP radio exactly once in the past ten years. I was pulled
out of line after x-ray, and sent to an area some distance from the x-ray
machine. There I stood until a guy came over and donned nitrile gloves, and
using a pair of tongs, swabbed my radio, cables, atu, paddles,

Given today and air flight security issues I would say this is becoming

they raise more searches and questions than not so this is no surprise.

Are you sure you have the Heil plugged into the Mic and headset plugs?
If you set the K3 in the config menu to Headphones + speaker do you hear

That sounds very wrong to me, John. I have a K3

Hello group.
I am using a headset microphone during contests connected to the rear

During normal operations I like my hand microphone most that is connected

Both microphones have different elements and settings.

Command macros are intended for situations just like this. See K3 Utility

Some clever owners have found ways to use two or more command macros and
need only one button to toggle between them. There's a link to a couple of
these articles in K3 Utility Help.

John,
You may have another issue but I thought I'd post what I'm doing.
First I did have a low RX audio issue. When I touched some buttons RX audio
would come up. That turned out to be a PL-259 not tight enough at least so far.
Second, if I use a heavy dose of NR, the volume sucks similar
Hi John,
I purchased the Heil Proset (sold by Elecraft) when I bought my K3 several
years ago. The audio level was inadequate for my deteriorating ears. I then
purchased the Yamaha CM500 headset and quickly sold the Proset on eBay. I've
never looked back. There is a substantial increase in audio
CONFIG:AF GAIN has a HI/ LO option. HI is default but it's worth a check.

I lent my K2100 out to a ham in Reading, PA a few years ago

So my audio is quite distorted as I can hear in my headphones with the monitor.
But this only happens on 20m and only with the KPA500 in operate.
Sound like RF? or is something else going on?
Thanks

Almost certainly RF getting into the mic circuit. Try a different mic
.. or use the rear panel mic connector as a check. You probably have
high SWR into the antenna feedline (or coax) after the tuner on 20
meters and that is why you only see problem on 20M. High SWR on the

Tom,
Check that your MKII has the capacitor modification that decouples the USB
cable
shield. If not, RF on the cable can cause audio problems. Details are on the
MicroHam site.

The capacitor modification applied to fewer than 200 units shipped more
than six years ago. It was identified early and most of the initial
production run were modified by the factory or distributors before they
ever reached an end-user.

There must be something wrong with your Heil headset or connection or
possibly a setting within the K3. I have the Heil Proset and it provides
all the volume I need. I'm sitting here listening to a VU on 20M CW right

The problem is well known as the common mode RFI issue due to a lack
of effective decoupling of the antenna and feedline.

Is having the Microham directly on top of the KAT500 Tuner with the
microphone cable almost touching the RF out a potential issue? If so,
this might be an easy fix for now.
No, not if your antenna system is properly designed and there is no
common mode current on the outside of the feedline.
Hi John,
Check the CONFIG AF GAIN setting. It suspect yours may be set to LO. If
so, set it to HI.
