Chip, A string of dashes means somehow the dash line is being activated (or grounded) - normally the ring contact on the key plug unless you have reversed the paddles. Do you have the key plug inserted all the way? Put a bare stereo plug in the key jack and read the voltage on the tip and

Some models are sturdier than others. The newer ones I have are much more rigid and don't sag (much) with the weight of one of our amplifiers. The slats on my earlier ones are about 1" wide with maybe 1/2" gaps in between. The slats on the sturdier ones are 3" wide, and there are three slats.
