That's a low-spec sort of the 666 production. Would have been a great
ham mic. Variable-D, so almost no bass boost.

I can see this has really drifted off topic.
MY first phone radio (1960) was a WWII surplus ARC-1 that a ham friend
modified to 144-MHz for AM. Ran 20w with 820's. The hand mic was
certainly a carbon mic.

Yes. In lay terms, it's a property of directional microphones with a

Sorry, made a mistake. I mixed it up with another headset I just bought.
The KOSS
SB 45 came with two 3.5 mm stereo plugs, mic and phone separately.

I looked at many ads, and there was enough inconsistencies in the ads (some ads
showed USB & 1/8” pictures, both) that I did not buy
If you want a Koss and an electret mike get an SB45. Basically an SB40 with
electret instead of dynamic mike.

Proximity effect has nothing to do with the technology of the
transducer, i.e. dynamic, condenser, electret, ribbon, etc.
Proximity effect is due to the type of transducer, i.e. whether it is a
pressure transducer or a pressure gradient transducer or a mix of the
two. That determines the
A long time ago, velocity ["ribbon"] mics were common in broadcast,
apparently they're not any more. Really boosted the bass if you close
talked them. At 17, I could crawl way up close to the RCA 44 at the
board and sound like James Earl Jones.

Many broadcast mics are nowhere near $400 (at least not when I

That is exactly why I said “inexpensive” dynamic mics. Yes, a $400 dynamic mic
sounds great. But a $2 electret mic element sounds nearly as good. Electrets
are a really amazing technology, invented at Bell Labs. They are a cheap,
rugged relative of the condenser mics used in studios.

There are definitely a ton of Shure SM-7 dynamic mics used in
broadcasting...but they're not "cheap" dynamics.

Great response from participants. Lots of check-ins even with mediocre
band conditions. Short skip was excellent on 40 meters. 20 meter net had
excellent long skip to the West coast. My KPA1500 continues to make a big

I'm looking for feedback from anyone using a Heil PR-781 microphone with a K4.
It's not on Heil website's "Elecraft compatible" list, however, HRO's catalog
does list Elecraft in the list of "elite" class radios for which the PR-781 is
designed. I also saw a Youtube video of a K4
