John, I would not select a radio on the input impedance of the microphone input! It is not critical at all - should be at least 10 times the microphone impedance. Pro-Audio from as far back as the antique Western Electric unbalanced systems of the 40s tend to be in the range of 1 k to 10 k.

About mid-2010, when I went from an XP machine to a W7-64bit, I just plugged in my Prolific USB to RS232 adaptor. W7 then loaded its drivers and off it went in a matter of seconds. My SignaLink (USB sound card) worked just as easily. Both fully interfaced my K3 with the computer with no hassles.

The machine will expect synchronizing pulses to lock up the head and capstan motors. Without sync some machines will not even go into the record mode, if it does noise will really confuse the motor servos. The pass band of a video recorder for NTSC (analog) is not necessarily flat to 4 MHz.

Another little known fact is BNCs come in both 50 ohm 75 ohm versions. I used both 75 ohm (video) 50 ohm (RF) at work. So verify if it matters to the usage! -- It's a little-known fact that a male N connector is a perfect fit with a female BNC.

If you are home brewing protection remember that RS-232 data signals go from minus to positive. Levels between -3 +3 volts are undetermined. If you try to protect the RX TX lines to ground then make sure that you can pass at least -5 volts to insure a good low. In my 30 years experience
