I held this for three days deciding whether to send it or not – here ‘tis.
I went from TT Orion - 3 of them at various times - to K3 . I was more than a
little concerned by size and Hold/Tap functions etc - I read all the stuff
from Sherwood ,keep reading stories here about KSYN3A wonders.

The external reed relay /miniature relays are OK IF they are keyed by the
key line AND the RF is delayed a few ms from key line down.(K3 does this)
The diode limiter circuits like the AS and others like that don’t have this
limitation.

There
AND - with the tuner you get a second SO239 antenna port - from front

panel switch.
May sound trivial - but eliminates one more "accessory" hanging on the K3 .
AND great place to connect a dummy load for quick checks.

Since we are in monsoon season here in AZ - if any storm is in area or

I noticed this morning that when I plug the KPA500 back in -(its on a 240
circuit all by itself) I hear what appears to be an initial transformer

Joe - I use "Fixed Tune" mode because I just like that display the best -
BUT I just checked "Tracking Mode" and I see about a half S unit noise when
I tune - I do not see any in "Fixed Tune" . UNLESS I look with the K3 on a
dummy load so no external antenna noise at all. Its visible there but

One more point about "loose" screws or nuts and Loctite. Any place the
hardware is going thru a PC board (or any material that will cold flow at
the pressures we get) , after a period of time there will be some "cold

Couple questions:
1.Can some Guru tell me where the little spikes at +/- 300 and 600 cycles
from the CW carrier (down about 40 dB) are when looking at a -73 dBm from
a XG1 or XG2 ?
2. I am curious what you typically see for the delta in dB between the

I read that article and was hoping Wayne or one of the guru guys would
comment . It is probably picking specs out of the pepper , but it seems to
me that testing a K3 around 5300 khz means there is essentially no benefit
from the ham band bandpass filters the K3 uses - Would like to see those
FWIW - a simple restore of the current config fixed it - live and learn.

Don't forget with the KANT3 you have choice of two TX antennas -- just put
it in bupass and away you go .
The KAT you only have one TX ant .
I can run a higher power amp by moving one coax switch to one or the other
amp .

Gee after reading several pages of discourse on split - I have reached the
conclusion that it really was all the radios fault when in the heat of
battle or a quick band change ( Hey the bandswitch buttons on the KPA are
worth the price of the KPA for that alone ) I did not notice I lost the
FWIW - I happened to check my K3 last night - it had been on for a couple
hours and it had drifted off about 4 cycles at 10 mhz from where I set it

Also if the antenna is really flat - less than 1.2 when the tune operation
starts - - the KAT500 bypasses the tuning network.
AND if the SWR after tuning is worse than the antenna by itself - the KAT
will bypass. Those bypass settings are stored in memory .
That confused me until I RTM again
Get a KPA500 - you get bandswitch buttons thrown in for free.
Then I have M1-M4 set up modes wise on each band
At my age I cannot remember which K3 number is which band.
Now I just peck the band buttons on the KPA.

I have my K3 set for Quick Memories, and use that for band switching.
There is one thing no one has mentioned - I work a guy fairly often who can
send with either hand - he tells me he taught himself to do that so if he
had a stroke that affected one side he was still in business.

There is an incredible range of characteristics to unwanted "signals"
that we loosely call noise.
If you are talking about SSB on 80 and 40 - I was playing with trying to
copy
the K2M on 40 M SSB last nite thru all the qrn - something to play with
is the SSB bandwidth and shifting the band- it makes a lot of difference
depending on how the guy has his audio tailored or how his voice is.
