the K3(S) with transverters for VHF/UHF weak-signal work.
The only problem is, an amplifier to bring the 2m power output of the 2m
option for the K3(S) up to 120w or so is around $650 (looking at Mirage)

A KX3 has since made an appearance, and one fellow brings his K3.

As an experiment, one cold and rainy weekend (about as close as we get
to winter) last year, I programmed all of the local 2m, 220 and 440
repeaters into a scanner and let it do its job.
Surprisingly, compared with 10 or so years ago, most were dead quiet.
Back then, 220 was a nice alternative
I'd prefer that, as well. I might have an old 19 FP monitor around
here somewhere that will still accept a SVGA connection.
If I were to buy a new monitor for that purpose, it would certainly have
HDMI support, and it wouldn't cost that much, either.

When I first saw peanut whistle, I assumed that Larry was talking
about QRP rigs. Then I re-read what he had written.
Maybe not so much today, since a computer has become such an integral
part of the hamshack, but there was a time 10 or so years ago that guys
would scour the swapmeets and
I was tidying up the shack yesterday, and came upon a box with the
Elecraft label.
Curious, I looked inside and found a couple of wire antennas from PAR
Electronics that I bought at Dayton and not one, but two, 6 kHz AM
filters for the K3.
Apparently I didn't install one when I ordered the FM
Heck, Charlie, Icom did the same with the IC-706 (the XYL has one of the
originals).
They didn't even change the model number, only the suffix, and it's on
the third incarnation.

A good friend owns a nice gift shop nearby. Her old computer died, and
