Dick,
I have both the SDRplay RSP1 and the LP-Pan. I have operated the SDRplay
using the K3S Rx Ant output and its IF output. Early comparisons between
SRDplay and LP-Pan were invalid due to a plastic case and cheap cables used
on the SDRplay - resulting in terrible noise floor and birdies on

Hi Mike,
I don't have one yet, but will need to build one for the November 9th SEMDXA
Club meeting: "FT8: DX Mode for Dead Bands." Would be happy to collaborate
with anyone, or share this presentation after it's done.
Planning to include a Camtasia video recording of the K3S connected to

Steve,

Not exactly. When using the USB port for CAT control of the radio, the RS232
(RJ45) port becomes a listen-only CAT echo of the responses sent by the K3S to
the USB port. I am unfamiliar with the Acom amplifier's
Yes... but don't go walking into an airport with one of those green ammo

I certainly do not blame the WSJT-x developers for not supporting serial port
splitting products – they can be a nightmare.
Put the radio and other shack items on the 2.2kw UPs. Buy a separate 220
volt UPS for the amplifier.

Hi
Rick,
My limited experience with Elecraft's utilities is that they only work when
direct connected to serial ports that can tolerate the baudrate
guesstimation process that occurs immediately upon the utility's launch. The
K3UTIL jumps between 4800, 9600, 19200, and 38400 baud trying to
The most likely answer is "it depends." Despite the theoretical differences
between the antennas, there are situational differences where one will
out-perform the other: quality of ground, height, propagation, direction to
receiving station...
BUT, you can measure those differences yourself.
Ted,
My K-Pod definitions are incomplete, but my plan is to program the
most-common front panel operations into the K-POD. I also thought that I
would get more mileage from the 8 buttons if the short-press and
press-and-hold features of the K-Pod initiated an "opposite" action (this

Ed,
Your proposed solution sounds similar to my current configuration, except
that remote antenna switch selection is derived from a connection on the
K3S - not the KAT500.
I have two main coax cables leaving the shack - one goes to a remote switch

Bob,
I'm using a Pi here as an alternative to installing a Virtual Serial Port on
Windows. The Pi routes and caches the CAT commands for a K3S, NaP3
panadapter, SteppIR antenna controller, and an Icom PW1 amplifier.
((actually, I just sold the PW1 amplifier and will likely modify that 4th
Jerry,
There is a small community of Linux users out there who report mixed results
getting Windows logging apps (N1MM, DXLabs, HRD, and Logger32) running under
WinE. My own experiments have used WinE and VirtualBox on Raspbian Jessie
with the newer quad-core RPi model 2. App performance has
rts when not in use. Amazon.

The comments thus far focus in the benefit of receiving two frequencies
simultaneously. Another benefit for digital modes is being able to receive

If you have a carpeted shack, shampoo the carpet with detergent but add a
healthy dose of liquid fabric softener to the shampoo water.
If you are a visual learner, you might also consider watching YouTube videos
about the K3S. A quick search shows that there are lots of hams - maybe not
in Orlando - who are willing to assist you.

For phone contesting, I would like to select the LineIn codec, transmit a

When you tap/hold the button, watch the K3 display to see if you get
