Thanks for the comments. I’ll just leave it alone for a while and see if it

My kit-built KPA-500 is about 8 months old. Lately I’ve been running a lot of
FT8 and FT4 at around 150 to 200 watts. I have really noticed a lot of loud
creaking from the KPA-500 after a few QSOs on digital modes. The manual does
indicate that some noise is normal but this does seem excessive,
Thanks for quick reply. This is the reason I have always enjoyed owning

I am nearly done building my KPA500 kit but not clear about one part of
mounting the transformer. It came with 2 thin rubber disks and 2 thicker ones
wrapped with the metal disk. The instructions call for 3 disks on the bottom
and one on top. Do I put 2 thick and one thin on the bottom with a

I have used a BOG, a Pixel Loop and a Wellbrook loop receiving antennas. The
BOG was ok but signal levels were very low and it needed a preamp. The BOG
needs a lot of tweaking and good grounds at both ends. K1FZ is the expert on
BOGs and can provide a wealth of information as well as
I used a small drill bit to countersink the holes as Ken suggested and also got
a better screwdriver. I was able to get the 1/4 in screws down flush.
Thanks for the help.

I just completed the build on my new KX3 last night and have it up and running
but ran into one problem with the build. My kit had the errata sheet with the
change in screw length to 2-56 X 1/4 in long for the battery holders. I could
not get the screws started on both ends of either battery
Thanks for all the comments on choice of options. I still need to sell my FLEX
and Argonaut first but I have some definite ideas on how to order my KX3. The
best thing I have learned about Elecraft products after owning a K2 and K3 is
that whatever options you didn’t get on the original order,
I am considering selling off my FLEX-1500 and Ten-Tec Argonaut VI to buy a KX3.
It will mostly be used for vacations, Field Day or park and backyard portable.
I will mostly use resonant antennas and do have an LDG Z-11Pro tuner (has
internal batteries) which could be used, so not sure about the

I have been using a Behringer Xenyx 808 Mixer with my K3 in order to share
headphone and powered speakers with other devices. When I connect the K3 audio
output to any of the balanced inputs or CD input jacks on the mixer I get a
very significant hum. I can overcome it with higher audio
Jim,
Thanks for all the info. I hoped that you might respond. I have read a lot of
your articles. That’s a lot of homework. I suspected that it may possibly be a
combination of connection issues. I may look into the transformer as a
possibility or may just look for something simple with 2
