Hi James
This has been my impression for the last 2 years when using our clubs K3's
I decided to do a comparison with several radios.
FT1000MP
TS870S
FT1000D
TS850S
TS930S
If you blind folded yourself and did not look at the S-meter and switched
between the radios, the K3 was always much
Hi Gary
What we dont want to see from Elecraft is cheap 12 volt PA for the K3. We need
some high performance high voltage fets with better IMD performance.
If a 500 Watt FET amp is to be offered maybe they can be sold with one 250 watt
module as standard, and the other 250 watt module as a
Hi Lee
Thats why FT2000's, Icom 7800s, 7700's and most of the 200 watt radios are
selling so well to contesters and Dx'ers, even with a much poorer receiver than
the K3.
The importance of a 200 watt radio for many who run older style high drive amps
is a deal breaker. Who is going to rebuild

Hi Matt
Most of us are black box operators. We need regulations for the amateur service
that specifies how our transmitters must perform, just like every other HF
spectrum user.
Its amazing how the amateur service holds its head up high as some sort of
technical demigod society, yet we cant

It makes me remember when Honda came to Motorbike
competition in the sixties with a copy of British engine
design, but with better steels... and win the

Hi Gary
I cant answer all the questions the brochure has limited information. Its
interesting reading, go download it.
The K3 in Europe has PR image problem, thats why radios like the terrible
FT2000 is outselling it probably 100:1, even with its crap receiver. I would
think that this new
Hi Bob
A good link...
I think we better move this topic off the K3 reflector, this subject is going
to cause a riot.
For those wanting to ask questions and debate the pros and cons of any radio. I
have started a new Yahoo group that anyone can join and discuss any transceiver
that you want.
Hi
It looks like Yaesus new FT5000 has copied the K3's architecture
The K3 will be getting a serious run for its money in the next few months.
Yaesu looks like it has done some serious competition analysis.
Features...
9 mhz IF
Not up conversion
Narrow roofing filters
99 db 3rd dynamic
Its pointless discussing hardware design changes for the K3, the K3's design
is carved in rock. It would probably be a good design consideration for the
K4, or K5. We are unlikely to see different models of Elecraft products roll
out like the Japanese roll out new radio models. I just
the external reference
will be a waste of money and time for most us.

Hi Wayne
If 2 X K3's can be phased locked ON TX and then combined with a Hybrid
combiner, it should be possible to substantially reduce the TX IMD. This is a
feature that the RS Series 4100 DSP transmitters use to improve TX IMD
performance. They do the same with their 1KW PA's combining and
Hi Wayne
Whatever amplifier comes from the Elecraft stable, a useful accessory would be
a hybrid combiner to combine 2 or 4 Elecraft amplifiers. This appears to be a
favored option for military HF users.
Hi Paul
I find the same thing, I have checked the clubs K3's against a rubidium
standard that was calibrated to a cesium standard. The K3 is spot on, the only
limitation being its 1hz calibration step limit for the TCXO. I wonder what
use the yet to be released external standard interface
Hi Gary
I agree with you on the analogue meters, you cant beat them.
I was hoping that Elecraft or LDG would bring out a meter for the K3 like the
LDG DM7800 that you could plug into the K3. I can barely see the K3's Smeter
and other meter readings.
The W2 is also very expensive for what It
Hi
Another good option to have on this board would be a directional coupler
for oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer monitoring. The Elecraft CP1 on this
board would be a great option.
A 2nd option could also be a dummy load using one of those very cheap RF film
resistors. This would have to be
Hi Stephen
It would be great if Elecraft could produce a wide range auto antenna tuner
like the SGC230 that would work with a K3. It would even be better if it was a
true balanced tuner. A waterproof reliable coupler from Elecraft I am sure
would be a big hit.

Why not produce a small mini panel with a VFO knob that plugs into the K3, the
KPOD. This POD could possibly also work with the P3.
All the knobs or buttons on this new mini panel should be user configurable..
Maybe these PODS could be configured so that you could daisy chain them?
The Ten
Hi Barry
I just updated our clubs K3's and none of them have this problem. I even
checked them into the dummyload. We have some early serial K3's and some
fairly new ones.
I would use a simple receiver like the Degen and a simple 3 turn loop of about
30mm. I would sniff around the K3 and
Hi Geoff
I would think that the phase noise limitations of the K2's design would limit
its appeal.
I would be more interested in a K3-Junior
Maybe this K3 junior would have a single receiver
Inbuilt power supply
200 watts 50 volt or higher fets
Layout like Yaesu FT950
VFD display - blue

Hi Gary
Actually the worst audio I have heard is from your new VK 10 WATT hams. They
either seem to be running ESSB or CB type audio with all knobs to the right! I
know its tough working DX with 10 watts however that does not excuse poor
operating practice.
I find it amazing that your
A good link for learning how to generate splatter. ESSB has no place on the HF

on adjacent frequencies.
This curse called ESSB has spread around the world. Just about every second JA

K3 firmware 2 years on and still much to do?
I still dont own a K3. I just cant bring myself to buy the K3 because
of its front panel layout and its operation. Although I would very much
like its receiver performance.
I have used one at a contest station and all that I can

Hi Tom
And who can ignore the TS830S! 30 years old and its giving the $10K IC7800
and most other modern radios a good run for their money. It can even have a

you will even be able to fix it, and it has all the
Hi Dave
Minor differences of a few Db here and there does not mean much in the real
world for most operators. Considering how perfect the ADAT radio is in all
aspects of its design, any criticism just seems like jealous nitt-picking.
I have been wanting to buy a K3 now since its release,
