Lloyd,
The first thing you should do is adjust the Pre-mixer and RF Bandpass
filters for the 20 meter band. See the K1 manual for the adjustment
procedure.
If that does not bring the output up to at least 5 watts (when using a
13.8 volt or greater power source), then suspect the 22MHz

The most likely problem is misalignment of band 2 of the KFL1-2. Perform a
realignment of the 20m portion per the K1 manual.
Don't waste too much time optimizing the
I recently bought a two-band K1, s/n unknown. It puts out 6W on 40m, but
only one watt on 20m, measured with a WM-2 and a dummy load... and the
display on the rig. Internal ATU installed. 13+V supply.
What to check first? etc.

Just an FYI since it's a little hard to find, the RFPROBE kit is on this

Don,
First of all I couldn't have solved this without your help. Thanks very
much. Elecraft should be paying you for your services.
The symptom was no power out during the band alignment of a 2-band filter
board in 9. Alignment and Test, Part II. Here is a recap of what it took
to fix this
Bob,
Actually Elecraft does pay me for the repair work I do. The email
effort I spend here on the reflector is volunteer. I have been doing it
that way for a long time now - since the original K2 Field Test in 1999

Hi,
I'm in Chapter 9, Alignment and Test, Part II. I've done the first set of
voltage checks and the values are all good.
Now I have moved on to Band 1 Alignment (40 meters). No position of L1, L2,
L5 or L6 has any effect. The display continues to show P0.1. (Also tried
Band 2 (20 meters)
Bob,
I believe you will need an RF Probe or a 'scope with a 10X probe to proceed.
First step is to check to see if you have RF from the crystal - P1 pin 4
of the band board.
Check on both bands.
Assuming you do have RF from the crystal, the next step is to check for

If you will entertain a suggestion from the primodial ooz...check everything
on the filter board at K3 (contacts 1, 4, 7, 10), L11, L12, C24, C25, and C26.
Check with ohmeter that ther is low ohm continuity
I reflowed the solder on K3, l11 and l12 on the 40/20 board
and I now have 20 meters!
So I need to look carefully at the 30/17 board now.
Good progress, Joe.
At least you didn't fall into the trap of thinking that when the filter board

Thanks again.

PS just had my first QSO with it, and it was on 20m.

Joe,
There is no difference between the SA602 and the SA612. They come off the
same line and while they all conform to the better SA612 specs, some hams
are convinced
these checks can be
performed with the filter board out of the K1.

I just completed assembling a K1. It works fine on receive and transmits

As the prior poster has suggested, the RF board path from from P1 pin 2

Not really. That's the band 1 path, for which satisfactory performance was

Don,
Thanks for your reply. Initially I had used a second receiver to align the K1.
But it appeared that my trimmers were more than 20 degrees off. So based upon
your suggestion I reset them and re-peaked. That did the trick! I am now
getting approx 5 watts out on all 4 bands!!!
I
Kieth,
Glad to hear you have it working.
If your reception gets louder by just gently touching the top of the
case, I would look for a problem in your antenna system - likely a
broken shield connection in the coax. OTOH, if it takes a solid tap to
change the volume, I would look for the
Don,
Wow you are good! I changed antenna's and the change in volume went away. So
I guess I now need to check out that 20 meter dipole (hi hi).
I was able to move the wires around on L1 and now have the following (thank
you).
40: 6.999 to 7.099
30: 10.093 to 10.193
20: 13.993 to 14.093
I have the 4 band board with 40, 30, 20 17 meters selected. I have re-checked
all capacitors and re-counted every turn on everything. It appears that I have
a good solder connection on L1 - L6. I can receive signals on all 4 bands. I
get 5 watts out on 40 and 30 meters. I get zero or P0.1
Kieth,
Are you certain you tuned the receive to a real signal of known
frequency on 17 meters? If you tuned it simply by band noise, it may
not actually be tuned for 17 meters.
The Pre-Mixer must be tuned correctly first - you will find the proper
position of the trimmer capacitors not far
Thank you for the advice so far. Unfortunately, the problem is deeper
than just filter adjustment. I tried tweaking the filters back and
forth quite a bit on 30M without getting any stir out of the external
wattmeter.
I am now on page 6 of the K1 manual. Under Transmitter Signal
I was recently at the transmitter alignment stage, and apparently did not fully
understand the procedure. I did not exit the TUNE mode, but kept tweeking
the pots for max power. I melted the grommet, but was getting 6+ watts out up
until that time.
Elecraft graciously sent me a new Q7, which
