: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
Good evening. I have a K3 and really love it. I am looking at purchasing a
new microphone pretty soon. I am currently using a Kenwood MC-60 and I get
excellent reports on my modulation. But I have been reading alot about the
Heil microphones and was wondering what
to type/write
with.

The Dxer will always get the set with the HC4 element...cuts off the lows

By using the TX Equalizer - you can make just about any mic do what you
want - from too much bass to Tweedy Pie!

Can do that with TXEQ in the K3 and you don't waste money on another base mic.
The MC60 can easily be made to sound the same. Bonus is it already has a PTT
lock too and no extra cable from Heil at inflated prices.

Hi Mark,
I use the Heil HM-12, and find that it works extremely well w/ the K3.
It's insensitive to room noise, and the K3's TX EQ, TX Gate, and
compression adjustments will enable you to optimize it for DX or easy on
the ears rag chews -- or anything in between.
If you'd like, we can set up a
Hi Mark, Hi all
Good morning from Australia, re the request
for recommendations for microphone / headset combo's. Like you I had
been using a Kenwood MC60 microphone .
I purchased a Koss SB40 headset with dynamic microphone; the mic was
very sensitive to position,

I would not wast the money on replacing the MC-60 with a Heil. If

I strongly agree. It's very easy to make almost any decent mike sound
good with a K3. Many K3 users, especially those who are competitive
contesters and DXers, like the Yamaha CM500 boom
Yes, this cheap thing worked for me like a charm. A 5€ micrphone and
some homebrewing did it. Sorry, but my web page is only in spanish.

I hace estimated a 19.6 € cost for this mic.
Good luck
Thanks Don. I will need to check that out. Mark KB3Z

Because we already have a mic we like on hand? That seems to me to be a
reasonable reason. (BTW, when the fifth word of a post is stupid,

IMHO Kenwood mikes are better than Icom. If one uses the back connections,
one needs to have a separate PTT connection or use VOC. I use a foot switch.
With connection in front, everything can be connected altogether.
As everyone says, almost any mic can be equalized in K3. The difference
Mark,
I currently have a Kenwood TS-480s with their standard handheld mike
The hand held mic from the TS-480 will not work without a change in
the connector (it uses an RJ-45 connector).

Most desk mics that are used with a TS-940 will work
You got it all backwards, Nate. I said stupid in reference ONLY to

some obvious reason why he would take the trouble to rework a
microphone, potentially spending half the cost of a new computer mic

Hi Guys, I am looking at purchasing a new K3 but am unsure of what would be a
good microphone to use. I currently have a Kenwood TS-480s with their standard
handheld mike plus I have an older TS-940s with a desk mike. I would think
that neither one of these microphones would work on the K3.
Mark,
The K3 microphone pinout is Kenwood compatible - but that does not
mean it is exactly equal. Pins 5 and 6 are differnet between the two.
If the Kenwood microphones under consideration do not have any
connections to either pins 5 or 6 at the microphone plug, then it is
quite likely

This may be a stupid question, but why are you trying to make one of

great with the K3. I've tried four different computer headsets
